Portrait

Here's a portrait I worked on today along with a process breakdown with some of my thoughts. I think portrait studies are a fantastic way to practice your fundamentals and create a piece from A to Z relatively quickly (compared to illustrating a whole character or scene). I use to do portrait studies quite often a few years ago and got the itch today - maybe I'm feeling a bit nostalgic.

These days I'm also wrestling with how much I should draw vs. how much I should paint on a given piece, and as you can see from this portrait the sketch is very loose and I jump into painting straight in colour very early on. This is much easier with good references at hand, so keep that in mind if you try this and find yourself struggling without references (It's just hard).

FYI, I recorded the process so it'll be up on YouTube shortly.

That's a great approach Giormio!

I find these process breakdowns to help me a lot when developing my skillset in stages. I get easily overwhelmed when trying to make an full illustration so keeping it smaller, say like hands only, torso or a face portrait and then braking it with stages like you've shown here makes everything so much easier. I even make these to myself as a reminder of the stages needed for my portrait studies or for example, making these kind of breakdowns with a sphere first when figuring out lighting scheme and then just replicating it to my illustration.
