like loop said its a slow burn but its also one of those games that the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. alot of side quest are just fetch quest, some of them have a good story to tell hidden behind them, some dont.

It has to do with how the game had a slightly different version in English (Gestalt - Dad Nier) vs Japans Brother Nier (Replicant) which is what the remake is based on. I guess there was some mixup.
