A Ritual 10 Years In The Making | Dragon Age: The Veilguard [Part 1]

I know you get locked out of some quests depending on some of your choices but it's not that big of a deal. 66 hours for doing almost all the quests sounds pretty good but I guess it's going to probably take me 100hr+ since I'm trying to collect everything, 100% every map and a lot of times since the world is so beautiful I just walk around looking at the environment.

AgustD

Aye i think the start was a little weak but the middle was good-very good and the ending arc was very good. I did almost all quests in the 66 hours i think 5 quests not done that i could see still listed on the maps but there could have been more.

James McCarthy

As a long-term fan of the franchise myself, I don’t buy this argument about the lore, sorry. The game has continued and developed themes that have been in the games since Origins. It nails the dark fantasy in a way that hasn’t really been present since Origins (starting with D’Meta’s Crossing and everything involving the Blight), varied with the goofy humor that they’ve always used to break the ice “swooping is bad”. It answers questions that fans have had from the start about the Old Gods of Tevinter, the Forgotten Ones, and the Evanuris in a way that is consistent with the information that is presented there. Furthermore, the game follows up on lore from all corners of the franchise. Masked Empire is put into the forefront again with Felassan’s perspective being highlighted. Maevaris showing up in Minrathous is an absolute delight. Isabela getting to live her dream as a pirate captain is wonderful to see. It builds on Origins, it builds on 2, it builds on Inquisition. It has difficult boss fights with difficulty options to match. It has some Cronenbergian levels of horror while still being sensitive in what it explores. It knows that darkness needs light and does so with more than just a bit of comedy. To say that the game doesn’t respect the previous entries in the franchise is frankly disingenuous. It has so much respect for what came before. It many ways it feels so much more like a sequel than the previous games specifically because it picks up on and follows the plot threads as established, rather than introducing new ones. 2 and Inquisition all have you starting over in a new place with a new story. 2 only slightly follows up from Ferelden and the Blight, mostly dealing with the fallout. Inquisition straight-up skips the mage-templar war that 2 spends its entire second half building up to. Veilguard actually follows from Inquisition, continues what Fen’harel is up to and develops it while still leaving him a relevant threat. I haven’t finished the game yet, only about halfway through, but this feels like the successor I want from a Dragon Age in 2024. I’m not the child I was when I played Origins, I’m a grown-ass adult with a whole other set of worries and horrors. The world has grown up since then, and I’m glad that Dragon Age has too.

AgustD

Wow, I'm almost 40 hours in and I'm around half way through I think, I'm trying to 100% the game haha. Good to know that the rest of the game gets even better. :D

AgustD

Cool you didn’t like it, but a lot of people did. Let mapo decide for himself and not dumping all your criticism (which some also can be vaguely spoilery) under a persons first playthrough. And fyi you can play as much as a “bad person” as DA2 and DA:I

Floraldolly

I’ve finished it and loved it despite its flaws, didn’t find the writing bad and definitely wasn’t my own criticism about it.

Floraldolly

I’ve finished it and loved it. It’s not perfect but no DA game is and it did leave me a complete sobbing mess at the end. Act 3 is also some of BioWare’s best work ever. Also be careful where you trust feedback about this game, a lot of the “the writing is bad!” comes from bigotry people that can’t stand trans or non-binary people

Floraldolly

Dragon age got me into video games so it’s near and dear to my heart. I am so interested to see your thoughts on the story of this game as a fellow lover of the dragon age world!

Kimmie Bartlow (SheWhoBards)

thank you all so much for the comments! love to see the support on a new series. If it's not too much trouble could I please ask that any comments you'd like to leave here, you copy paste into the youtube video comments? helps the algorithm when the video goes live!

Mapocolops

I joined Patreon specifically for this playthrough. Your Dragon Age let's plays single handedly hyped me back up for Veilguard after a decade of waiting, and I am so excited to see what you think of the game. Lots of thanks from an old Bioware fan who appreciates a streamer that gets into the lore.

Faye Jones

Same. My biggest selling point for Dragon Age was never the gameplay but always the lore and worldbuilding. And there Veilguard is just so disheartening. At best it just flat-out ignores previous lore. At worst it contradicts if not downright disrespects it. Not to even talk about returning characters. Without choice import those characters should not have returned. They now have no defined past. They can neither confirm nor deny their character development. They are just cardboard cutouts of their former selves. I hope he finds some enjoyment out of this game and then maybe I can take some joy out of that myself. Because as it is this game has left me so sad for what was my favorite series.

10ToesOfJuriHan

Excellent i thought we would have to wait for Baldurs gate to end (really enjoying that playthrough though). I just finished Veilguard at 66 hours and it was very good, first act felt a little shallow but it picked up soon enough and i love the location design, worlds and the villains. The ending arc is the best they have ever done (:

James McCarthy

I finished it yesterday and thought the start is fine just a little shallow i found it very good and excellent sequel to DAI and found there was lots of significant choices and the ending was the best they have done (was quite long and epic) Not sure if it is my favourite yet but it is up there

James McCarthy

Thanks for your input!

I just finished the game last night and feel like all the people saying the writing is horrible are GREATLY exaggerating. It definitely has it's moments of clumsy and cheesy writing (I was put off by about half of the first act), but it also has some pretty brilliant moments too. I don't feel like that's anything new in a Bioware game either. I can understand being upset about previous games not factoring in too much and sad that you can't really play a jerk character, but I think this game just had a vision in mind and what's there is pretty solid. I'm not saying it couldn't be better...it could. I also wish that more from the previous games was present. But I still appreciate it for what it is. I mean, to me, Andromeda was like...one of the most disappointing experiences as a Bioware fan. THAT game had bad writing. Veilguard feels like something that has some care and work behind it and above all, it feels complete. I think the ending sequences especially might be some of my favorite from the series.

The Animated Heroine

Excited to see you play and to hear your thoughts on it!

YOZZii .

Im torn! I'm one of these who decided not to buy game (for now, not for a full price anyway) because of evidences of bad writing and not existing choices in game. But I so would like to watch Mapo play and hear his opinion! What to do? 😪

Parksnwreck88

Glad to see you playing! Looking forward to seeing your honest option after your first game is over!!

Teresa Morrow

I played a full game. The writing could be better! The companions just aren’t what I have been used to with a DA game. I am not saying that I didn’t enjoy the game. I just think they should have put more into writing quality and not just graphics. And what is up with all of the reused graphics from Southern Thedas! Yet, their own lore talked about how different things were! Yet, we still have the same unknown pictures hanging around that no one has ever identified! Like I said. Some good. Some ( not so bad), and some I think they just didn’t care about how certain longtime fans would react and feel!

Teresa Morrow

I unfortunately was devastated by how much I disliked the writing (especially the dialogue) in this game - after waiting 10 (!) years. The biggest offender though was the butchery of the lore (especially the secret post credits scene!). But I will watch this because I like you so it is still gonna be a fun watch! also: Unfortunately BioWare completely abandoned making RPGs. You literally cannot role-play anything but a nice guy. Decisions do not matter and the previous 3 games are an afterthought or they even directly contradict your own choices.... Any way have fun! Still gonna enjoy because you are entertaining as hell!

nunululu0101

i finished the game the other day and can say the writing may bother some in the early game and that it only gets better as it goes on, the last act of the game was everything i wanted from it.

tree

I've seen the writing in reviews, clips and memes. So the impression i got was that the game has the worst writing of any AAA RPG i've seen so far. But from what i've also seen is that the game does not deserve the hate some people give it. It's mostly the writing that is terrible. If those impressions are wrong, i'd like to know, especially since i'm not uninterested in playing it myself. I gave an example of where i got that impression so i'd like to know where that source was wrong.

Daniel Burgmann

Im confused..your first comment made it seem like you have first hand experience but your just doing what everyone else on the internet is doing and parrotting other peoples opinions? Why even write the comment when its not your own thoughts?

Patrick

lol, even trans-activists think the writing is bad. What are you talking about?

Transbadger

Unless it's untrue what i've heard and read in reviews? So far i've not played the game myself BECAUSE of the bad writing/dialogue. If i could ask you a favor, can you watch the video "Whats Wrong With Dragon Age Veilguard" by Cohh and tell me where he's wrong about what he's saying about the writing?

Daniel Burgmann

In that case you probably will never notice.

Daniel Burgmann

I personally really disliked the game but I’m excited to see u playing it and hear your honest opinions about it

NeSz0

just hit 60 hours and still waiting for the writing and dialogue to get bad

homoerotic 80s volleyball scene personified

Welcome to the game with the worst writing i've ever seen in a AAA RPG! :D Overall the game is not as bad as some people make it out to be, but be aware you might get the urge to skip dialogues at some point.

Daniel Burgmann

Really happy to see you playing this so soon. You are by FAR my favorite content creator. Sadly, I could only play the game about 10 hours before I got fed up with the decisions that the developers made but I'm super stoked to see you play it and hear your opinions. Much love.

Talion The Ranger

Duuuuude, I was just wondering the other day if you were going to play this. Assumed you'd at least finish Baldur's Gate first. Hope you have fun!
