TLS 0.65.0 Release

UPDATE

I am on top of basically all known bugs, so even though I expect to receive a lot more feedback, I guess it's time for a clean-up build. If you've been waiting to play, this version should be a smoother experience! Unsure if the public release will be Friday, because I could be getting feedback very late in the week.

0.65.1

- None of the bugs were catastrophic, but some prevented players from getting credit for unlocking portraits.

- For those who don't want base customization, a succubus assistant will now offer a pre-set selection of portraits.

- Simon is now optional during Lilith's dungeon.

- In Altina's quests, people who offer hints about going to other locations now remain until the location has been found.

- The Northern Crown's stats have been changed, not necessarily buffed.

- Alternate Robin sprite thanks to Lamsey.

- Misc bugfixing and polishing.

I made my best effort to stop characters who haven't joined from appearing in Janine's quest. If anyone is left, that's a bug.

I saw there was discussion of Lilith's math, but this didn't make it into the .1 version. Juggling too much, sorry.

ORIGINAL POST

It's time! I have a meaty update for everyone with a wide variety of content, plus the long-awaited portrait feature! I hope everyone will enjoy this. ^-^

TLS 0.65.0

- New plot quest, beginning in the Renthnor Wilds.

- New harem quest, beginning in the Yhilini Royal Chambers (any time in Chapter 5).

- New harem quest, beginning in the base front hall (any time after the Incubus War).

- New harem quest beginning in the Renthnor Wilds (after completing the new plot quest).

- Major new base feature: full portrait mode, including 29 unique pieces of art and 125 paintings total!

- New harem member, with either 1 or 15 sex scenes, depending on how you count.

- Aside from that, two plot sex scenes.

- Final combat party member, bearing 17 new skills and some bizarre mechanics.

- In Balia's challenge, teaching orcs skills only costs essence once each iteration. If you create new orcs, you can teach them already-learned skills for no additional cost.

- The Simon Recovery variable has been slightly tweaked now that there are more than enough points.

- 5 new illustrated scenes: Aka's New Form, Hilstara X Succubi, Lynine's First Time, Megail 100, Orilise's First Time

Some notes for players:

Overall, this update is not heavy, loaded with plot twists, or an optimizing challenge. But I've filled it with lots of little things I think will make TLS more fun overall, so I hope everyone enjoys it. ^-^

Comments

DankPotatoes, I think you make a fair point about the banner artwork. That said: > And to be frank, in it's current form, I think it's one of the weaker pieces of art in the game. It's evident that it's one of the first artworks done. There isn't much movement, not much passion. it looks more like a renaissance painting, than a sex scene. It's not really, y'know, *hot*. No offense, but this is quite possibly the wrongest thing you have ever said in your life. > Makes the game look a bit overly ... high-brow? That's not exactly a false impression, is it?

Decanter

Got everything, thanks! Also Lilith's math.

Lamsey

Whoops, I tried to account for this but didn't get it done. Fixed now!

Sierra Lee

Minor bug in 65.1, you can have the intro conversation to the painting quest twice. Once from the sparkle in front of the canvas, and again when interacting with the canvas itself.

WaxerRed

1-2) These are cute ideas! 3) Oh, I know what happened. It was supposed to be blank, Trin, Trin, blank. Gotta go look up the IDs again. =/ 4) I intentionally didn't use them all for the preset. I added the two you suggested, but it's okay if some don't appear this way. 5) Sure, why not?

Sierra Lee

Additional thoughts on portraits: 1/ It feels like Janine should put up at least 1 portrait in the Yhilian palace, probably the one of her and Simon married. 2/ I think Wynn would also put up something of Wendis in her place in Zirantia. 3/ Not sure if intentional or not, but if you have the succubus set up pictures, then the four spaces in the Trin area are Trin twice, one empty frame, and one missing frame (although you can still interact with the spot to put something up). If I could make a suggestion for filling out the space: Trin, Trin, Trin, and Simon's dick. 4/ Unless I'm miscounting, the special images not preset in the palace are: Ralke, Ginasta, Ivala/Carina, Wendis dressed, Sarai, Janine/Simon, Simon, and zoomed in Simon. Sarai has her picture in her place, and Ralke is in the orc caves. I mentioned above where I think the Janine/Simon and dressed Wendis images could go. Putting up the Ivala/Carina image in the Carina mission church is still probably too ridiculous (but maybe regular Ivala portrait?). The Ginasta one is a bit meme-y, but if it showed up in the world somewhere that would make me happy. 5/ Unless you're opposed to using the regular sprite portraits, I would also suggest the Doom King portrait be added to the Doom King Palace in the Chalice States, to go with the statues.

Innocuous

This has been reported in a previous comment - it'll be fixed in the next version.

Lamsey

So I just downloaded the new version and did Lilith's quest. I went to talk to Yarra about the harem and when I tried to scroll to Lilith the game crashed with Script 'CSCA Harem' line 868: Type Error occured

Dally Ranma

By contrast, I completely forget I added that feature. Fixed, thanks! Hopefully there aren't too many more of these.

Sierra Lee

Lilith also appears if you 'Check Orc Equipment' in the courtyard of the base.

Innocuous

Honestly, I don't consider this a bug and do not care. But since the tint is set by a parallel process, there's no harm in removing it, because it will be reapplied when appropriate. Now people can stop mentioning it.

Sierra Lee

But you gotta think about the lighting of the portraits in the extradimensional base. It's gonna mess with your feng shui if you can't preview the portraits as they will be lit in the Tower...

Lamsey

Can't ya just slap an auto-run 0,0 event normalizing tint on the painting selection room? Just brainstorming...

DukeLeto7

Whoops! I actually did think about this, so you'll note she disappears if you leave/reenter the quest, but failed to remove her in the first transition. Good catch, thanks!

Sierra Lee

Catching up on a few updates at once led to doing Balia's quest after doing Lilith's. Lilith is an available party member while using the pure orcs while all other characters are removed from use. I'm guessing that is unintended (though her complete lack of skills with 0 synergies leaves her as just an enormous ball of stats with a basic attack).

Portrait fixed, thanks! As for the tint, I am frankly fine with it.

Sierra Lee

Errata: The portrait hanging in Esthera's throne room is displayed as Sabitha + Aka on map, but as Nalili + Esthera when viewed. When accessing the painting select menu in the Extradimensional Base, the painting selection room retains the purplish "Tower Tint".

DukeLeto7

Befriending Mestan has taken extra concerted effort the whole way through since he's so guarded and aloof. It feels appropriate that it takes extra concerted effort to properly memorialize him too.

Jeffrey Lebowski

I forgot to mention it on the last post, but I really liked that we got the Black Gloves back. Coming out of the Prison without them made me sad, but it feels appropriate that we get them back in some form by paying extra special attention to Lilith's dungeon.

Jeffrey Lebowski

If you want to make Robin a gray cloak, sure! And yeah, I knew what you meant, I just thought it was a funny typo.

Sierra Lee

Oh, right. Should Robin's alt sprite have a grey cloak to match her faceset, then? I could do that easily enough. Chose/choose: yeah, 'chose' works too - one of those ones where I wasn't sure if it was a typo. Derp. Puppy god is my typo, I just meant it needed hyphenated. Although I now demand a puppy god be implemented in the next update.

Lamsey

I'm glad to hear you enjoyed this update as intended. ^-^ >Robin's faceset uses her alternate form during this conversation, but her sprite is normal and I don't see any reason for her to be in her grey form: Intentional, and that actually is her alternate sprite. >chose -> choose (or possibly 'so choose')? There are several instances of this one, not sure if I caught them all. Uh, so... this one actually isn't a typo, but maybe my intention was wrong? It still feels like something that someone might say to my ear, at least in casual speech. >(I also agree with the earlier comment that it would be good if there weren't three scenes with identical openings) You'll take my surprise identical openings from my cold dead hands! My intent was another "Wait..." moment when players realized they weren't duplicates, leaving them even more uncertain about Lilith. >(also, not sure if this is a specifically British (or possibly Scottish) thing, but to me "wee-wee" is a childish form of "pee", not "penis") There's overlap between the two in American English. >puppy god -> puppy-dog: Haha. >Just double-checking that this "..." isn't a placeholder: Isn't. >Lilith's numbers I was calculating 25x24... but I suppose that number is only true if the order matters, isn't it? If you're confident in your calculations I guess I'll change them over. >I got the leftover Sarai bug too: Dangit. =/ I don't want to track down which event is wrong, so I'm just giving her a line of dialogue.

Lamsey

Lots of typos etc, so posting in a separate reply to save people's scroll wheels from wearing out.

Lamsey

I avoided the earlier discussion about Lilith since I wanted to avoid spoilers, but having read back, I'm glad you changed course from your initial plans. I'd have found pseudo-lolita stuff utterly abhorrent, whereas pretty much everything about Lilith's content in this update is hilarious. Particular highlights for me: pulling unexpected things out of chests, such as "another dimension" or "a Lilith"; bees; her shifting relationship indicators; bees; the "why the hell do you keep talking to me" reaction; the flavour text on all the props during Trin's quest; and bees. She genuinely feels chaotic in a way that freshens things up, and in that sense I can see the appeal to a man reluctantly considering his own immortality. Janine's quest is also one big "D'awwwwww" from start to finish. I eagerly await the patch to allow me to put Qum's creation in its rightful pride of place. Altina's quest provides some nice variety - more tricky in terms of roleplaying than in optimising numbers, particularly with the Daughters of Elves. I increasingly find myself being less bothered about numerically optimal routes than in what feels right for the characters, and this is a good example (saving Carina's men being the other hill I will die on). I'll still look into the numbers at some point for QA purposes, but I thought the point was worth mentioning since I hope you'll take it as a compliment to your worldbuilding / character building. Combat balance in Lilith's quest was OK for me - a little bit of shuffling to avoid weaknesses for specific battles, but nothing too peaky or frustrating. The hardest one for me was the one with three DEF-hitters, since I tend towards having good defence on all characters.

Lamsey

I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful, but my honest answer is that I think the effect on gaining new players will be minimal. I have 99% given up on the market and I don't want to put myself through marketing processes I find unpleasant. But the fact that I hate this sort of thing means that it's also a viable interpretation that I'm just being lazy and avoiding it.

Sierra Lee

Wait... I see what happened. Easy to fix, thanks for everyone chiming in!

Sierra Lee

Ok, I see. Good to know that there has been thinking about this on the devs side too. But are you sure that there is a point to delaying something like an updated banner or main menu? Those upgrades don't disappear if you introduce them earlier, no? It just means that anyone who stumbles into the game over the next 1-2 years, before the game is officially released, are more likely to buy and play it. Those who find it at launch still see the same artwork :)

DankPotatoes

Same here, it doesn't switch to Robin's alternate form.

Yeah, unfortunately I replayed the scene several times and Janine only shows the first two versions of the portrait. If it works in testing and no one else has noticed it, hopefully its a rare problem specific to something going on in my save

Jeffrey Lebowski

Wait, do you mean to say that Janine only shows two versions of that portrait? I thought she showed them all during testing, and the event looks like she should... there could easily be an issue here, but I don't see what it is. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Lilith's content. ^-^ Having the hints for Altina's quest remain is a reasonable suggestion. Right now those aren't set up for that, but I could add new switches without disturbing saves too much.

Sierra Lee

I haven't mentioned it, but I do intend to revisit some artwork at some point between finishing the main game and leaving Early Access, which I believe will be the main time it will receive a large amount of new attention. Otherwise, reworking past art can be an endless rabbit hole in a field where few projects reach completion.

Sierra Lee

That was a really fun update! Janine's quest was so cute. I do have a bug report I think is different than the others reported so far. In the scene where Janine makes the Robin/Wendis portrait, she doesn't actually show off the alternate version of Robin even though she says she does. Luckily it is still accessible during the portrait selection, but it makes the scene a bit more confusing. I really enjoyed Lilith's content! The recruitment quest was fun and the dungeon was really pleasant to look at and explore (even more so in Trin's quest). Her scenes... I asked for bugfuck crazy and you delivered that and more. I actually said "Not the bees!" out loud haha! You said earlier that you didn't think anyone would find her scenes erotic, but then you also made the Megaboob scene, so I'm getting mixed messages there... XD jesus christ I'm still processing all her scenes. I spent a long time cycling through her greetings and scenes and that was just really fun and wild! I also adored Trin's quest and just how many dialogue events you put into the dungeon for like every little object. I also like how Trin's quest was honestly one of the most humble of the groups. It wasn't really a bid for world-dominating power and the trip wasn't even really her idea. She just thought it would be fun to fuck around with her new bad bitch friend. I found it pretty cute. Still crying over the fact that Mestan is actually for reals dead though. We barely cracked his shell and started bonding with him. #neverforget #lostprince #sunkencontinent Altina's quest felt very satisfying to me from a character perspective. I really liked that we went back to the very beginning and addressed Altina's sorrow about the elves. That was her first interaction that wasn't just being a fangirl to the Chosen. I really like Altina as a character. The daughters of elves question really was a tough one for me though, I do have one request for making that quest more accessible, however. There are multiple interactions that provide hints of where else in the world to go to get influence for her quest (such as Ulrissa's tower). However, once you first have the conversation giving the hint of where to go, the speaker disappears and you can't see the hint again. If I talk to them and then save and quit to come back later, I could totally forget those threads, or if I misinterpreted the hint about where to go and wanted to double check (Like I tried to go to various Tower areas to get Ulrissa's help), I couldn't do that. Would you be able to keep those hint givers there until their help is completed? All in all, I greatly enjoyed this update and am so happy the portrait mechanic has finally been implemented! I spent a good amount of time fine tuning where I wanted all my paintings to go to tailor the themes of the rooms

Here is another long comment, Sierra and Annikath. One that seems appropriate on an update, where art is such a core pillar of the update. I wanted to ask and argue some points regarding the artwork and advertisement for TLS: Have you thought of having Annikath updating the promo-art, and some of the other artworks, that serve as most player's first impressions of the game? Here are my thoughts: First impressions are *everything* in the world of video games. I know for a fact that I have shut down several video games forever, after a few minutes, due to the writing, presentation or artstyle not appealing to my spoiled preferences in the first few minutes. Or opted out of games on steam, simply due to the fact that the banner looked less than stellar. I even stopped playing TLS once, after the prologue, a few years before I got into it proper, on a recomendation from a friend. You look at any game's achievement statistics, you see how many games are shut down within the first few hours or so. Before people get a chance to react to good writing, they first react to visuals. And fortunately, you've got an excellent artist on staff that seems more than equipped for improving any potential new player's visual experience. There might much artwork left to do, but it seems to me that these hypothetical first impression artworks likely outrank them all in importance by orders of magnitude, if you wanna judge them by how much they will do to attract additional players to the game. I think the ability of TLS to catch the fleeting attention span of a modern gamer could be significantly upgraded with just 3 additional pieces of artwork: 1) The banner artwork: The first thing that people see when they enter TLS's Steam, Blogspot or this Patreon Page. Having a few RPGM sprites as the first encounter with the game likely already costs you potential buyers in the door. And experienced RPGM gamers might even recognize characters like Altina and Qum as edited basic RPGM sprites, which sadly seems low effort. Annikath could likely create a beautiful and more dynamic artwork with the very same characters and make an immediate "next in queue" button press much more unlikely for Steam users. 2) The Main Menu/Incubus Prison Escape artwork of Simon: Now this image is conceptually stunning, especially after the escape scene. And the shadow of a man, looking out on a desolated battlefield makes for as cool of a concept for a Main Menu as can be. But it honestly looks a bit dated and low(ish) effort. Not to mention, it doesn't exactly mesh that well with the artstyle Annikath uses for all the rest of the game. Once again, first impressions: The kind that keep a new player who is a bit bored and unsure on which long game to dedicate himself to next from closing soon after, and instead hooks his attention with a beautifully brutal image of a lone survivor on a battlefield (with some badass music) 3) The initial SimonxRiala scene artwork. Annikath has definitely improved her art, update by update, piece by piece. Which brings me to this scene, which might just be *the* most important scene in the game (if you're talking sales numbers) Riala and Simon is where the prologue's facade drops and the narrative starts to take itself seriously. Which is why it seems to me like this scene must be more than good. It must be show that without a doubt that the rest of the game aspires to be the paragon of quality that it is, and shake off the confusion and potential quitting-itch of whichever players came into the game with doubts in their mind, whether this was for them. This scene *must* be perfect, to keep as many players aboard the boat, while the story slowly hooks them. And to be frank, in it's current form, I think it's one of the weaker pieces of art in the game. It's evident that it's one of the first artworks done. There isn't much movement, not much passion. it looks more like a renaissance painting, than a sex scene. It's not really, y'know, *hot*. And I think that fact costs players. Makes the game look a bit overly ... high-brow? For lack of a better word? My point is, I think Annikath has gotten far better with time. Her drawing of faces, movement, breathing, anatomy, backgrounds... It has all gone up, and if she so wanted, she could return to the original sex scene, and bring it up to the fantastic standards she's kept for the last several updates. With just these 3 pieces of art, I believe that the percentage of players who go from clicking on this game's Steam page, to buying it, to playing way past the prologue could increase to a noticeable degree. That's just my thoughts though. I just want more people to discover this gem of a game. I hope it's at least something new to think about, or an angle you haven't explored too deeply before. Either way, I'm aboard this TLS train till at lands at 1.0.0 station. Ciao!
