July 18 Update

Last week I was missing three major maps. This week I have one more and some promises. I would very much like to release TLS 0.57.0 on Friday, but it's going to be a stressful week.

I finished everything that isn't built on top of maps. After that, I began pushing forward in a linear fashion with testing - not checking every single branch and alternate dialogue, but trying to run through all events. My plan is this: if I get to a point that needs unfinished maps before the mapper gets back to me, I'll make them myself. This is an unfriendly thing to do to someone I am commissioning, but their communication about the last maps has not been what I'd prefer.

I'm not going to be able to relax until this update is out. The reason is that, for complex updates like this, I try to hold the entire thing in my head at once. There are many details, from the variables to the order of which event bounces to which map on which branch. I can hold a reasonable number of things mentally, but not an infinite number, and not stretched out over so many days of achronological work. The longer it extends, the more it will suck for me and the more oversights will make it into the released version.

Some Positivity: Process aside, I believe that you will all have a very fun time with this update. There's a lot of payoff that I've been building toward for a long time. I've added some screenshots to show work done so far, from the tactical map (which is a much bigger headache than anticipated) to Qum's eloquent commentary. ^-^

Trailer Post: Go look at the new draft of the OEA trailer. Discussion in that post.

OEA Maps: This is actually the last set for feedback, believe it or not.

This process still needs more steps of checking, integration, and refinement... but those will be delayed until after the TLS update. For now, a major task is done. The mapper and I finished negotiations and began working on maps on June 18 of 2020. From then to today, we've exchanged 1326 emails... about 3.3 per day. Though I think this was worth the price, both in money and time, I am relieved that the core work is finally done.

Anyway, as I said: I hope Friday. I don't want to discourage people from contacting me, but if you have questions or issues that are easily delayed, maybe leave them until next week.

Neat, I have some questions But you are busy, I will wait this Sunday

The OEA maps continue to look great. The Last Path in particular for me. Seeing the different tales is such an interesting idea. That is an impressive number of emails for OEA maps but for what it is worth they all look great. I hope you're also happy with the results. Between this and the TLS update coming to a close, I hope you get a breather soon! The TLS teasers teased me good. The hype train continues. Good luck this week! Butts!

Normally I'd consider that they'll never find out that Simon is the Doom King, but the more we burn the reputation we've built the more I imagine people will wonder/urge 'Commander Dargai' to depose his boss.

I wonder what will shock the people of arclent more? Finding out Simon is the doom king? Or finding out ivala is bound to him? I assume this will happen after we rescue ivala.

Glad you're excited for it! Elleani: This is the majority, but there will be a bonus or two at endgame. Renthnor Wilds: Though I want the Wilds to remain a great unknown region, the plan is for you to visit two places within it. Arclent Acceptance: Yeah, the idea is that it's shifted to a currency.

Sierra Lee

Vibrating with excitement here at a TLS update (took a break for both other stuff, and because wanted a break before doing a fresh new playthrough), and curious: For Elleani's whole political thing w/ her new position, have we received all the bonuses we're going to get? Like, the wiki has a comprehensive breakdown - will there be other ways to increase her score later on, or is this all we're getting? Yes, this is old 0.56.2 news, but I'm catching up. As for more details on the vibrations - oh my god we get to see airships in play. Fuck yeah flying castle. And hell yeah Lord of Blood - he seems pretty generic, but I do want to see where he ends up. It doesn't seem like he's done anything too horrible like the Incubus King or Fucklord, and he seemed pretty interesting at the 2nd Gathering. Want to see where he ends up, even if it is probably going to be an unmarked grave. EDIT: Also, really hope we get to go to the Rhenthor Wilds. There's got to be all sorts of neat stuff there given we know that there are plenty, plenty of ruins around everywhere, and that the Wilds are the last great 'unknown' of the world. EDIT EDIT: Also, I'm guessing we've hit the point in the game where 'Arclent Acceptance' has stopped being a value we're trying to pump up by any means necessary, and has become more of a currency? Since so much stuff in Chap 5 has had options to burn Arclent Acceptance for bonuses

The Agnostic map actually isn't any of the above, it's a separate "Screw it, I don't see how else to do pillars with this tileset" category. We experimented with parallax-scrolling spheres, but since they move so much slower than the walkable map, that would have meant we could fit only a handful. I felt like a larger number going in chronological order was preferable. Crucible: I think it's getting shadows later, but I'm not sure we talked about it, come to think of it.

Sierra Lee

In the "This airship is called the Agnostic" screenshot, the pillars in the corners look cut off at the top. Is that a known issue from an unfinished map? The spheres in the background of the Last Path are a cool idea. Are they parallax-scrolling too? It'd be really cool if the smaller indistinct spheres scrolled at a different speed from the bigger ones, but I dunno if that's possible. The background of the Heart Of Darkness looks a little hand-painted in places, but I don't think that'll really matter. The Fragmented Path looks good - I like the way the blocks of ground fade into the darkness of the background. The Crucible looks fine to me. The different-styled floorboard sections don't look out-of-place at all. The lack of shadowing makes it difficult to see where the paths are in between the bookcases in places, where the top edges of the ones to the south join up perfectly with the ones to the north. I'd be inclined to shave a couple of pixels off the tops of the bookcases to make the separation clearer. Wilhelm and Ulfina's clearing looks pretty. It might be a nice touch to add some of the flowers from Ulfina's necklace-building quest.

Lamsey

Yeah, the parallax moves diagonally fairly fast. Glad you like the maps!

Sierra Lee

To be honest, I'm not sure what the little statues are, but I asked for something that looked unique and thought they worked. Yup, combination of their homes, or metaphorically Wilhelm's autumnal Tale beginning to flower.

Sierra Lee

I'm feeling the hype. Can't wait to see what all of this has been leading to for years :) On a sidenote, naming the ship "The Agnostic" is hilarious concidering the stakes of this war, lmao.

DankPotatoes

It's always nice to see things coming together. I totally sympathize with the problem of holding the entire sequence in your head until final implementation. I think that anyone who has been the game master of a tabletop game understands the struggle. As always, the maps are amazing to me. I can't really spot anything immediate that needs work. I really like the faces in the paralax background for the final fight, is it one that moves?

Runcible Technician

The Last Path looks really cool. I also like the little statues at the top of the Crucible. The different wood pattern looks fine to me. Apparently the combined nature of our cabin builders is autumnal? But the flowers... oh, I get it: It's a blend of the foliage from Wilhelm and Ulfina Tales.

Decanter

I imagine I will be well prepared though. Had the airship fleet built the first part of chapter 4 and increased militarization of that fleet. Must have the largest fleet of all other nations.

JJS

Agnostic - how fitting.

Zaiaku

What text?

Sierra Lee

This event is why he existed way back then. ^-^

Sierra Lee

Well, that appears to be the end of the theory that El Dom de Sangre's Roaming Fortress was called that because it was built with the fortune he made from cell phone roaming fees. Quick note, this update appears to have some text from an older update on OEA repeated.

DukeLeto7

So glad you included these pictures for TLS in your update. Looks so awesome. It's interesting to see the Lord of blood mentioned again. You really put him on a back burner since chapter two. To have him take a major role in chapter 5.
