And Then Quinns Went on Holiday

Hi all! 👋

Quick post from me to inform you that tonight I am boarding an Aeromexico flight from London to Mexico City. Unusually for me, this isn't a work trip, it's actually a vacation!

I'm not going to say that this trip is entirely the fault of a man in a shop who asked me when my last holiday was and caused me to realise it was in motherfucking 2017, but it was mostly his fault.

So yes. This Englishman is heading to Mexico! Let's all hope my body survives the onslaught of sunshine, colours and flavours. However, if all of the Good Times cause me to go into renal failure or make my eyeballs fall out or something, you lot were the nicest Patreon community a man could ask for.

See you guys in a little bit. 😉😉😉 And if you have any recommendations for Mexico City, Oaxaca City or Mazunte, let me know in the comments!

xx

Enjoy the city!! As a Mexcian I can tell you (although maybe a bit late) you should check out the boat rides in Xochimilco aswell as the Aztec Ruins of Tenochtitlan!

I'll also be in CDMX for the next couple days with a buddy of mine. We get in tomorrow night, and I'll be there until Saturday afternoon. If you or anyone else here on the Patreon want to meet up lmk! Would love to have a drink, talk about games, and go see the art at the Museo Archeologico. Hope you have lots of fun! :-)

I've been doing some research for a trip to Oaxaca, here's a copy of my notes so far! None of this is vetted, so big grain of salt! Includes some of the comments above that I've added to my list :) https://docs.google.com/document/d/15DZ6N3FLPDZByry9e1IUUIIVsYkG2cFR4R82cbAisHU/edit?usp=sharing

Brendan Albano

Go to a Mexican wrestling match! Best time ever.

Spam Spamalot

Ha, I've been a handful of times and you've got me taking notes for the next! Awesome.

Shazirah

Pujol in CDMX is great and Monte Alvan!

This vato has said everything I came here to say. I've spent a lot of time all over Mexco and did my doctoral research there. My favourite place, though I have not been there since I've moved to the UK a long time ago. The only thing I'd add is to look for some botanicas; market stalls or shops that sell medicinal and interesting plants, prayer candles, ans all sorts of healing, spiritual and magical paraphenalia.

Enjoy! Mexico City is such an amazing place. It's like Prague if someone dropped it in the middle of a jungle. So very old, classic and beautiful. Wonderful city to wander.

Lojaan

Heard great things! Also heard the tap water is to be avoided.

michaelopolis

I hope you have a fun trip man!

Just don't play Cartel while you're there.

Ozniras

Enjoy you definitely deserve a vacation!

Oh man, one of my favorite cities on Earth, enjoy Quinns! If you drink, Mexico City is an *incredible* bar town. If you want some quieter spots to sip on cocktails, I highly recommend Tlecan (a very cool mezcalaria with what I can only describe as a sort of "stone sarcophagus" vibe), Baltra (very cozy local spot), Handshake (fancy shmancy experimental cocktail bar, the kind of spot where the bartenders wear vests), Bijou (less fancy shmancy, you can order off a Rubik's cube), and Long Story Short. Last time I was there I got a local guide to go to a wrestling show with, which was worth it for the amount of cultural context, as well as info about ongoing storylines, he was able to provide. Wrestling shows in general are a shitload of fun. Great place to practice The Whistle That Instantly Starts A Fight (as it is one of the few places that it will not Instantly Start A Fight) There's a lot of really good street food in Mexico City, but if you want something a bit fancier and want to avoid the obvious picks of Pujol and Quintonil, might I recommend Esquina ComĂșn, which is sort of hidden away on top of a rooftop terrace and is absolutely delicious. You have to reserve in advance (I had to do it over Instagram DMs?). Lines might be bad nowadays, they've been Michelin starred since the last time I was there. If you want a coffee shop to hang out at where people are fairly sociable (great for recommendations, or just chillin'), I spent a lot of time at Junkie in Roma and got some good reccos there. People in CDMX are extremely friendly, and constantly gave me recommendations, more than I could ever do in one trip, so wishing the same luck upon you. Pack Imodium.

Unfortunately I’ve never been, so no recs from me. Well, unless you start feeling superhuman and decide to swim across the Gulf of Mexico. I can recommend some great spots for escape rooming in Florida.

Do I have recommendations? Absolutely! Mexico City is my hometown, and I’ve been to Oaxaca around twenty times. Let’s dive in. First, since I know you enjoy history, the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City is a must-see—you’re going to absolutely love it. Many visitors flock to the Teotihuacán archaeological site, which is fine, but I also recommend Xochicalco. It’s located south of the city, about the same distance as Teotihuacán, but it’s less crowded and features more original structures. In Oaxaca, you can’t miss Monte Albán, a stunning ancient city of the Zapotec civilization. Back in Mexico City, there’s a castle on a hill surrounded by forest—the National History Museum. It has a more modern focus, primarily on the 19th century, and it’s definitely worth visiting. A word of caution about the food: it’s delicious but can be very spicy. If you’re not used to it, I recommend carrying antacids. That said, food might just be the best part of Mexico! In Mexico City, you have to try tacos al pastor. Everyone here claims to know the best spot, but honestly, you can’t go wrong—they’re simply amazing. In Oaxaca, the regional cuisine is some of the best in the country. Definitely get a tlayuda at a traditional market—it’s a large tortilla topped with meat and vegetables. If you’re feeling adventurous, try mole, a dish made with around 30 ingredients, including seeds, fruits, various types of chili, and sometimes even chocolate. It’s complex, traditional, and absolutely delicious—I personally love it. There are thousands of recommendations I could share, so let me know if you’re interested in something specific: nightlife, museums, nature, art, local board game stores, or even more food spots. If you’re in Mexico City on the weekend, I’d be more than happy to show you around. Feel free to DM me if you have any questions, need help finding something specific, or are looking for budget-friendly options. Enjoy your vacation—I hope you fall in love with my country! It’s full of unexpected surprises.

While in Oaxaca, do yourself a favour and go to Pasillo de Humo (corridor of smoke). It’s a wonderfully chaotic experience where you grab some meat from one vendor, tortillas from another, and sides from a third - all to combine into a fantastic (and crazy cheap) delicious meal. Also - it’s worth doing a guided tour of Abastos Market where you can try all sorts of wonderful delicacies

Have a lovely time! ^w^

Calliope Rannis

That’s awesome. Some of my fam is from there. If you want to look up some history then try looking up the cristeros war. Bloody 3 year war that happened in Central and western Mexico and they should have some plaques and history markers. Cheers my dude, happy travels

Cristian Garcia

ENJOY!!! (that's a command... not a wish)

Tom van der Lek

Have fun!!! I stayed a while in San Agustinillo, next to Mazunte, which I found a bit more chill, less busy, with a nice beach. (Possible bungalow option is sueno cabanas del Pacifico or cheaper option Cabanas Juquilita).

Clare Pearce

Hope to have you back full of vitamine D and slightly singed but happy!

Michel Plokker

Have fun fella, just got back from Lapland myself and survived the flight by watching a few favourite QQ episodes

James Taylor

Have fun!
