My old abandoned projects.

Most of you know me for my Mega Man X clone, Udongein X. Here's a quick look at my older projects!

Udongein X is the first game I fully finished and released, but it is not my first ever project. That title goes to this unnamed Touhou fangame. Most of the old footage was scrubbed clean to save space, but I still have some clips and even a fully functional  build.

This was a project I started before I learned how to draw or use 3D models. It was more of an ARPG, with stats and items. But also it was a combo-heavy game in the vein of DMC. But also it was a bullet hell. Needless to say, it was a mess, and I bit way more than I could chew. I thought this was a cool idea, but none of this meshes together now that I look at it with a fresh eye.

Reisen was planned be the main character, but I also wanted Junko and Mokou to be playable, with their own playstyles, with Junko being more range focused, and Mokou being a close range fighter. Reisen, of course, could do both.

I took a lot of the ideas from this project when making Udongein X, such as the numerous Guilty Gear references, and its approach to upgrades.

Who knows, maybe I will come back to this game sometime, or release the build to the public if there's any interest.

---------------------------------------

While I was looking for an artist for the above project, I decided to make a small game to practice coding some more. I landed on an auto-runner. Unfortunately, I scrubbed all of it, although you can still see it in one of my oldest Twitter posts.

---------------------------------------

A little context. I actually started my art journey not through pixel art, but 3D modelling! This next game was supposed to be a PS1-styled RPG in a Touhou Alternate Universe. I scrubbed all of the source files clean, but some footage survived.

The story was about modern day Japan, and a Mafia-Yakuza-Cult like organization called Lunarians, doing all sorts of illegal stuff, which Reisen was a member of. This is still something I want to explore further, and I will tell this story someday, but not through game form.

Fun fact, the Reisen on my profile pic is THIS Reisen, and not the normal Touhou Reisen.

But there's more! I actually retooled this project into a Moon War Touhou fangame with one anon from 4chan. He was supposed to be my programmer, but one day just ghosted me. I was upset at first, but this incident led me to start learning art and coding more seriously so I could make my games all on my own. Well, mostly, I still need someone to make music. So, wherever you are, that-guy-from-4chan-who-ghosted-me, no hard feelings.

But even this isn't all! After that, I decided to change engines from Unity to RPG Maker, and make the game in 2D. The art was traced from 3D models at this point.

You can recognize some of this from my earliest Twitter posts. I made a lot of battle animations for this, but ultimately abandoned the project. It was still too much for a first game, so I went back to the drawing board.

I spent some time practicing pixel art (most of which was traced from 3D models still), then landed on a Mega Man clone. It's a simple game, right? Well, yes, compared to my first projects anyway, but then I figured there's already too damn many Mega Man clones, so Mega Man X it was. MMX is still not a very complex game, and I removed some of MM staples, such as Boss weapons, to make a very focused, simple experience.

After Udongein X, I started work on a Touhou fighting game. I never showed it to anyone, and it didn't make it past the prototyping phase because I knew I wouldn't be able to make netcode for it. I knew I'd have to hire a real programmer for this one, but didn't have the funds. So, I decided to start work on another game.

Touhou SMT is something I dreamed about a lot, so what the hell, I knew I could make it. One prototyping week later and...

3D perspective without the use of 3D figured out. The most important part, done! And so, Artificial Dream in Arcadia was born.
