2025-04-15 03:32:00 +0000 UTCThe stories related by Yohan's Avengers are all based on real cases btw (though I don't know if there's a specific one for the sexual assault as sadly that's probably happened too many times to count): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampoong_Department_Store_collapse and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Korean_humidifier_disinfectant_case I love the little pissing match tween Gaon and K (and how amused Yohan is by it - the girls are fighting!). Attorney Go is one of my fave characters so I can't wait for you to see more of him. I also love the evolution of the nationalist thugs' ringleader - he's been in the show since the very first ep, initially in a blink and you'll miss it scene, but as the mood of the country shifts we see him capitalising on the changing tides of public opinion as he gains more and more prominence/screen time. I'd also just like to take a moment to point out the titles of the two tracks that are sort of Gaon and Yohan's unofficial character osts: 'Hope of Dystopia' and 'I Am the Abyss'...I'll leave you to work out which is which! The soundtrack for this show truly is perfect, I never get tired of listening to it, and it's a total rollercoaster - you circle through ALL the emotions. It's also worth checking out the episode titles (although perhaps retrospectively to avoid even the vaguest hint of spoilers) - just a taster: the castration ep was called 'Scissor Hands', this ep is called 'Resistance', and next ep is called...'Batman and Robin'!!! I love how last ep and this ep we have acknowledgement from both Gaon and Yohan that Yohan WOULD indeed go that far (knocking out Soohyun/switching the fraudster) cos he is THAT guy. That's one of the most fascinating things about Yohan - if you think about it, he doesn't actually lie so much as weaponise the truth, which I think is much more interesting. And how much do I love that hint of desperation we see when Gaon confronts him bout the switch and Yohan admits the lengths he's going to - and is prepared to go to - are all just cos he wants Gaon on his side. Another tiny moment I love is Yohan offhandedly telling Gaon to swing by cos 'Elijah's getting restless' - sure, Yohan, it's just for Elijah's sake, nothing to do with you missing him, amirite?? But also all the unspoken (and unquestioned!) acceptance from everyone that Gaon is basically now a permanent resident of the Yohan household, like, that is not a normal heterosexual living arrangement tween a dude and his boss!!! They're just trying to gaslight the audience into believing there's nothing sus bout it! I amuse myself by imagining Yohan and Gaon planning their little coordinated sugar daddy switch-up at the end - how did Yohan know when to pull up?? Did they discuss it beforehand, so Gaon standing up was his cue to arrive? Was he parked just round the corner watching?? Did he drive all of a few metres over to them just so he could make his grand entrance while Gaon made his grand exit?? I mean, it sounds outlandish but if there's one thing we know for sure, it's that Yohan enjoys his theatrics!! Last week you were pondering the nature of Gaon/Soohyun's relationship, and while I'm saving my full thesis on that for a future ep, I will just say that I think you can really clearly see in this ep how Soohyun truly is based on that familiar SML archetype that shows up in so many kdramas, just genderflipped: the inherently decent childhood friend who has been supporting the female lead all her life whilst stoically pining from afar (only to lose her to the toxic and emotionally stunted rich dude!), and it's so fun to see it subverted this way, with the protector being the woman and the protectee the guy. Sunah in her blood-stained dress sucking on her lollipop as she edits the video with her blood-stained fingers while the Chairman's body lies only a few feet away = iconic. Who's doing it like her?? The bit with her and the President at the funeral was giving me major Revenge of the Sith vibes ('so this is how liberty dies - with thunderous applause'...) - even the music was all imperial marchy! Sadly I don't think it won any 'proper' awards (my villain origin story is how this and Squid Game were released within a month of each other and the latter became a worldwide phenomenon, won a bunch of awards, entered the mainstream Western consciousness (though the NF release is prob largely to thank for that) and got a second (and third!) season while Devil Judge went mostly under the radar...talk about injustice!). I do wonder if it was just a little too on the nose, too uncomfortable for ppl, especially given that it was airing during COVID - imo SG's premise is outlandish enough that you can enjoy the social critique whilst still experiencing it as escapism, and without having to ask yourself the hard and not always flattering questions you so rightly point out DJ poses in practically every ep. I don't think it created the requisite distance needed tween the audience and events unfolding on screen for us to safely say 'well isn't this just awful thank goodness that's not the world we live in!' - basically it wasn't dystopian enough! Not to mention the fact it's essentially constantly calling out the complicity of the media-consuming public. At least that's my only explanation for how an actor as well-established/respected as Jisung didn't even get nominated for the Baeksang, cos I've seen quite a few of his shows and imo this is by far his best, most subtle and nuanced performance. On a less petty/bitter note, I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited for you to watch ep 9!!! It's a very close call but if I had to pick, I'd say ep 9 is my ultimate ep - it's just crammed chockablock with all my favourite scenes. And I know the competition's stiff (hee), but the gay gay homosexual gay found family vibes are through the roof!

2025-04-14 20:09:18 +0000 UTCIt's crazy how accurate this show is. Like the actress helping Yohan that was SA'd. In Belgium last week, a Med student was charged with the same crime, but excused because he is "talented".

2025-04-14 17:17:40 +0000 UTCThis show reminds me of year 7 ethics class and being freshly in secondary school being faced with moral quandaries such as 'should the death penalty exist?' And 'if yes, would you execute the punishment yourself?' At 10am And you're like idk I'm 12 and I know crime is bad and some is worse than others but again I'm 12 and just really looking forward to lunchπ
