Mortius, I love how you went through all those feelings explaining the feelings at the beginning of dirty girl. Now imagine how I felt going through them watching it live with my almost 14 year old little cousin next to me. It was HER FIRST EVER MUSICAL, AND I WAS THE ADULT WHO HAD AN EXTRA TICKET WHO SAID “What’s the worst that can happen? It’s a musical set in hatchetfield”🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️. Needless to say we did not talk about that scene at all and just talked about the rest of the show and how she now enjoys musicals

tbh I watched the trilogy in reverse order, didn't see any of nightmare time, and feel like I got what I needed just from clips and comments from fans. It felt like Nightmare Time was something that worked best if you were there for it when it was happening. I appreciate the fans who filled in the blanks for me, I don't really feel like I needed the full post-Covid experience myself to appreciate NPMD (imo, the highlight of the trilogy anyways).

I love Dirty Girl. Not only is it very funny and incredibly catchy, but its such a great song to help characterise Grace. Everything about this fantasy and what it means about how Grace sees herself, Max, sexuality and sex in general?? The fact that her fantasy has to involve Max revealing his christianity, then insisting over and over again that it doesn't mean anything, its just physical, and her own back and forth whether to give in during the song. Like how much of all of that is due to her upbringing, and internalised guilt and shame, and how much of it does she genuinely find arousing? And Grace can't figure out the answer to that at all because once she wakes up, the whole thing becomes shameful to her!

Awh, I was hoping you’d check out Nightmare Time but that’s alright! There are some jokes, references and lore drops in the show that would be a bit more rewarding if you’d watched it, but it’s not required for your enjoyment. I would definitely recommend checking it out on your own time if you don’t have time to film it, it’s a great series in its own right. Whatever you choose to do, hope you love NPMD!! It’s one of my faves and it was my first love Starkid experience so it’s extra special to me ✨

If you want to watch any in your free time for fun, I can’t recommend Watcher World enough! Just a brilliantly written episode/mini-play.) Pointing out my favorite details from other musicals: When the cop says “Sweetly ralphed” is a reference to Sam from TGWDLM (Sam Sweetly, Charlotte Sweetly’s cop husband) Grace covers her mouth completely during the swears in High School is Killing Me. Also, not a detail, but I do love the headcanon that Mayor Lauter gives Steph her allowance in crypto because he sucks. Sycamore is the school Paul went to instead of Hatchetfield high! (“Timberwolves! We hated you guys.” “We hated ourselves”) Peter is actually Ted’s little brother, not son! Grace’s sign for canceling the homecoming dance has coming censored. Mayor Lauter isn’t just calling her an accident, an October Surprise is political parlance for when an issue pops up right before November (voting season). (Speaking of fantasy high, Max Jagerman has ALWAYS reminded me of a Brennan Lee Mulligan bully) The background singers in Cool as I Think I Am represent Pete’s success inspiring the other nerds. You’ll see it a few times in this show: background singers representing people who are there but aren’t actually in the scene. When Max says he brings light to darkness before beating up Pete in the parking lot, I LOVE the lighting actually going dark with his choreography. Amazing for the staging, and also clever/natural way to hide the stage changing from the school to the Chasity household. Grace bathes in a swim suit, canonically. That’s not just for the stage. That’s how deep her purity complex runs. Ah. You’re gonna need the sword for this song. The shoe isn’t enough. (God, I shamelessly love this song because it’s simultaneously such a fascinating look into Grace’s repression & character, and also so unbearably cringeworthy, and also a REALLY well sung/preformed song.) Richie and Ruth standing up for Pete to a cool kid, even if it is in their own terrible-self ways.

The best way to think of Hatchetfield is what I like to call “semi-anthological.” Each story exists in a separate timeline, with the same characters and various common elements and some canon events between all of them, although some are directly connected; at least, the Nightmare Time episode parts “Forever and Always” and “Time Bastard” are because the way those are written they feed directly into each other (and the fate of the main character of Time Bastard is one of the things that is canon across all timelines and is the main reason I hope you’d consider putting NMT in your misc. Wednesday slot since it’s not particularly music-forward but does have a lot to offer as far as storytelling and Hatchetfield lore (fair warning tho the first episode only has auto generated captions)

PS, for the reprise TGWDLM kickstarter, they did a livestream of Hatchetfield trivia. The first section is NPMD so definitely skip that, but they do a quick recap of each of the nightmare time episodes after the other musical sections. That's only probably about 1-2 hrs if you want to just get a baseline synopsis of each of them and a couple of trivia facts (as well as behind the scenes stories). It's the "Series Recap Livestream". The whole thing is 4 hours, but the full length musicals and explaining the trivia rules took up the first 2-3 hours

In terms of clothing in this, I assume that Hatchetfield and surrounding towns? are on an isolated island, preventing more high-end or contemporary products from getting shipped out there. A 'You Get What You Get' kind of situation. I bet even the rich people of Hatchetfield have out-of-date technology, fashion, etc because times are just that rough. Cara is best Care Bear. I promise to never shriek in comment sections about Nightmare Time. /I/ haven't even covered all of it because there's a lot, so I watched Youtube essays about it to save time.

Dirty Girl is one of those songs that you don't like the first time round but it's an earworm and eventually you find yourself humming or even singing it under your breath.

You simultaneously laughing and cringing at the characters is so perfect. They really go for that awkward hormone driven stereotype of high school and lean into it.

I watched NMT after watching NPMD, and I don't feel like I missed anything major. It does make me appreciate the show more, but NPMD was already my favourite show before I watched it, so it was just the cherry on top of an already perfect ice cream
