Red Sonja was originally supposed to be the sequel to Conan the barbarian. That’s why Paul thought it was a Conan movie. They had a deal to do 3 Conan films, but since Conan wasn’t the star of Red Sonja they didn’t consider it a Conan movie. So they couldn’t legally use the name.

The way my history professor explained it to me was that it is literally industrial in the sense of we have two machines(trench lines) and we just have to keep feeding men and material into it until the enemy machine breaks down and can't keep functioning. The middle classes of the time had been raised on adventure books which presented war and the military life as this exciting dash-and-fiery experience, one month and done attacks, which was largely based colonial war experiences which were way more asymmetrical.
