Just getting around to watching this one and not sure if you’ve made the connection just yet but the name of Oz’s band on Buffy is Dingoes Ate My Baby which is a reference to this real 1980 Australian case!

Sam Reid, always playing a tortured bisexual. And he does it so well! 😂 Poor Dale is going THROUGH it!

Fun fact about Evelyn - her actress played a minor role as a Talamasca agent with maybe two speaking lines in the 2002 film Queen of the Damned. 2002 Queen of the Damned being partially filmed near little Sam Reid's hometown sparked his interest in Lestat when he was a wee lad. The fact that they ended up in this show together feels like pure universal chaos in the best way, to me.

It's so weird hearing you say that you love Evelyn! I hated her from the very time I saw her. I just find her so judgmental, condescending, and manipulative. The way she looked at and spoke to Helen at the party... just disgusting. And yeah, up the duff means pregnant. And bickies are biscuits or, as most Americans would say, cookies. Dale clearly wanted Tim in that scene before Tim made a move. And then the disgust on his face when he pulls away, it's so indicative of the disgust he feels towards that part of himself. And then when he gets home and Helen says "Everything changes after what you've done today"....That's such a great line. Obviously she means his career after the report, but the look on his face clearly shows he's thinking of the kiss with Tim and how accepting that part of himself and being his true self could completely change his life too. He puts up such a facade. It's all just so well done. And in the scene where Dale is doing the live cross, Tim looks so proud watching him. I adore Tim. He's such a sweetheart.

I crack up every time Dennis shows up on screen. I remember that in the first season I had exactly the same reactions to him as you do. 🤣 Although, to be fair, when my supervisors talk to me like that at work, I always try to remind myself that they’re probably being put under the same pressure, and that sometimes, when you’re working under that kind of torment, it’s normal to take it out on others without realising it. The news world is a suffocating place, you’re constantly on edge, and even more so in the 80s. Also, I can’t wait for you to see how Nolene’s character develops, because she’s one of my favourites too and I absolutely adore her. This latest episode is one of the best for me. Poor Dale. He’s clearly shaken by what happened with Tim, but every time Helen appears and gives him that lovestruck look… it breaks my heart for her. 😭🖤 Helen Northville deserves every good thing in this world.

Yes, the director Emma Freeman and DOP Earle Dresner were involved with IWTV Season 2, episodes 6 and 7. In the interview for Autumn Brown, Sam shared that they shoot episode 7 in takes that were like 15 minutes long (that’s insane) because Emma Freeman likes to make the scene flow. She used the same method in this show.

You mentioned the indirect storytelling and that’s what I love about this show. It doesn’t treat the viewer like they’re stupid. They tell us what we need to know as we need to know it, and plants seeds for the rest. It also doesn’t string out mysteries for too long.

Taco, I cannot adequately express how much I am enjoying your reactions to this show. Award-winning performances here by Anna Torv and Sam Reid. I wonder if the show won any awards in Australia.
I love how the show does that slow drip drip drip of backstory for characters in a way that comes naturally. And yes, it's called indirect characterization so you weren't making up a new term -- you're just on it, bud!
Helen says she hasn't seen her family really since she was a teenager. Dale lost his dad at 15 and basically took care of his mother. Both of these individuals are carrying a lot of past trauma that has clearly informed who they are as people.

Man this is so good! I had off watching this because you know, another subscription. It’s so great to see Anna and Sam killing it. It’s wild to see so many key historical events being covered.
You had me cracking up with “He seen the luscious locks of Tim!” 😂
