Sorry, didn't mean to double post, i hit return, thinking I was creating a new paragraph and whoops, posted. I created a post over on r/firefly to rate your favorite Firefly reactor: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefly/comments/1frwkxi/a_rating_system_for_reaction_streamers_who_watch/ I plan to add you to the list, but need to watch some more youtube uploads to make a more complete analysis. Once I found out I could watch your patreon watches I went with those. I will say, that the pilot episode upload is difficult to watch due to the constant blurrying and many edits cutting off scenes before they can play out. Also, one of the things that I find important in a reaction edit is having the real highlights of an episode featured. Most streamers seem to hit the same scenes, but they ARE the ones we want to see your reactions to. I think you do an excellent job of articulating your thoughts and I am looking forward to the rest of the series with you. I just think that you could refine the editing to improve the quality of the experience.

Have to say that I love your reaction to the show. The reason we seek out Reactors is to vicariously re-discover the shows we love. We want the people we watch to have those genuine feelings of wonder and joy that we had when we first found out favorite thing. Your analysis of each episode is well reasoned and though provoking and I think really sets you apart from many of the other reactors who have done Firefly.

I would say with Episode 5 the reason why they left him because they straight up didn't have time to try and find the doc. Like Book needed help ASAP. That was my read at least

We are on the exact same page Natasha regarding episode 5. I didn't dig into the towns folk portion as much in my recap but I felt that as well..they established a need for Simon to be there and there and the people seemed nice, but for plot sake we need him on the ship so we get the witch portion.. Mals foundational character pieces got a bit shaky here for me as well, overall still fantastic and loving the ride but earned a little side eye 🤣🤭

Safe is such a weird episode— cool hints about Book and some really nice moments for Simon and River, but the set-up has always felt awkward to me. Mal ditches them to run off and get help for Book, but there’s no plan there until Inara insists they go to the Alliance for help so it feels out of character. The “burn the witch” twist is so so silly and really undercuts the humanity of the settlers trying to scrape out a living, which contrasted with the town in Train Job and another episode you’re about to watch seems off-tone. Overall kind of gratified to see you kind of side-eye it at the end, because it’s still good TV bc all of Firefly has the same heart to it, but plot-wise probably the weakest single episode (IMO).
Our Mrs Reynolds on the other hand is so fast and witty and genuinely surprising, and gives us Saffron who I think would have been a major recurring character and potential main cast member like Spike was in Buffy had the show had more of a run.
In terms of episode order, just want to make sure to say that you ARE watching them in the intended correct order, it’s just the “previously on” section that’s wrong. I’ve never seen those because the DVDs didn’t include them so didn’t think to warn you. May be a good idea to skip them going forward in case they start spoiling more important bits.

I loooooove Our Mrs Reynolds, it's definitely one of my faves. The cold open is maybe the best one in the series "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you". Christina Hendricks is so great.

My take on Mal leaving Simon and River behind is that Shepard Book would probably be dead by the time they were found. Mal took the option with the best chance of saving Book AND getting River and Simon back. Plus, Mal had told Simon, "Don't worry. We won't leave without you." Mal needed to come back for them to keep his promise.

Also, I believe Mal has considered Simon a part of the crew ever since he asked him to be their medic - he just hasn't said it out loud. But River isn't part of the crew. Also, of note, I don't believe Jayne thinks / understands that Simon is part of the crew, and treats him as such.

So, here are my thoughts on Mal. #1 - he has the entire crew in his care, meaning, if he doesn't get paid for a job, it's not just his ass on the line. And he takes that very seriously, hence the "gag her if you have to" line. It's not out of malice, it's literally the life of the crew at stake if their jobs don't go off. #2 - Mal had to deal with the most pressing matter at hand which was the fact that Book was going to die without medical care immediately. As Mal said, they didn't have time to go looking for Simon and River, he had to make a plan in order to save Book. #3 - I am of the belief that Mal's biggest flaw is his lack of communication, which I think stems from a dislike of being questioned. He wants his crew to obey his orders regardless of their personal opinions on them, and sometimes he withholds his internal thoughts process to his detriment because it makes him look perhaps uncaring or unkind. I believe he knew the whole time that his intention was to come back for them, he just didn't care to share that with his crew.
