FROM THE ARCHIVE - "Copper Canyon" (2007)
Added 2020-05-31 01:12:50 +0000 UTCIt was 2007. I was 21 years old, and I was madly in love. I needed something great to give my girlfriend for her birthday. She loved the acoustic songs that I had written and would often play for her. These were the songs that were floating around that I didn’t know how to fit into The Tea Club’s sound.
Should I write her a song? Of course I should. But was “just a song” enough? Of course not. This is the love of my life we’re talking about here. I decided I would write a new song for her AND record an entire album’s worth of my acoustic songs. I would make her a birthday ALBUM.
“Copper Canyon” was the first song on that birthday album. I had written it recently, trying to merge my love of Nick Drake and Steve Howe. I thought about trying to make it a full Tea Club song, but I kind of liked it as it was, just a two minute guitar piece. So we left it alone.
Happy ending, that girlfriend would later become my wife (and The Tea Club’s album cover artist). Although I don’t think I ever topped that birthday present. (Pro tip: don’t set the bar so high on the first year's gift).
