It's the holidays, which means I'n buying books for other people (and okay, maybe a few for myself because no one buys me books anymore). Since all I've been reading is Alice Coldbreath's medieval romance books and listening to the Mercy Thompson series (still. I'm on Smoke Bitten), my TBR would have been really short this week if I just stuck to what I've been reading in. So I thought I'd share some of the cool books I've found for others!
For wee little folks--I got my friend's baby the Goodnight, Krampus board book, which is very cute, and Joseph Coelho's book Ten Word Tiny Tales to Inspire and Unsettle, which is very, very cool. A bookseller at Third Place Books showed it to me and it's 22 artists illustrating ten word stories on each page. How fun is that? For a friend's three year old, I got I Will Read to You, a spooky/sweet picture book by Sterer that's all about a kid who goes into the woods with his mom to read a bedtime story to spooky creatures. It's very cute.
For older kids, I got my friend's son who's 13 and very obsessed with the Legendborn series (which is so, so good) a few books his mom thought would be comparable--Under Sea, Over Stone by Cooper (I loved this book as a kid and almost lost my shit when I met Susan Cooper as an adult), Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White and Hexwood by Diana Wynn Jone, which I haven't read. (I have of course read Howl's Moving Castle.) I also got my friend's son who is big into Percy Jackson the book Mythopedia by Good Wives and Warriors (They also did Myth Match, another gorgeous book) which not only has different myths from around the world, but beautiful illustrations.
Other books I got for nieces and friend's kids: Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting by Brown, The Dark Lord's Daughter by Wrede--I didn't even know she had another book out! I loved her Enchanted Forest Chronicles. Her Radiant Curse by Lim, which I haven't read yet. Six Crimson Cranes has been on my physical TBR for ages. I actually wanted to buy Dragonfruit by Lucier for two people because I read a chapter or two of it for something and I didn't realize it's not out yet!
Smalls is very into manga right now, so he got the first Full Metal Alchemist from me, but also Dusk & Grim by Chuck Wendig (I think he'll dig Wendig's humor), Bite Risk by S.J. Wills, which I've never heard of, but looked fun. (And you know how I feel about werewolves.) I also got Juniper's Christmas, Eoin Colfer's newest book for us to read together. I loved Artemis Fowl, so we'll see how that goes.
I got Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Khaw for Bigs--he doesn't read a lot of books lately because he's been wicked busy, so I thought a short horror novel might be perfect. If you're looking for other short books for people, I bought two different people Thorn Hedge by Kingfisher because of course I did.
For fellow writers and a few other adults--I bought several different mythology books that Chronicle put out because they are SO PRETTY. I got Monstrous Tales, Tales of the Sea, Tales of Japan, and for myself, Celtic Tales. I want the whole series, but managed to only buy one for myself. For now.
This is...not all the books I bought. But it's most of them. I know I got some graphic novels for my nieces, but I'm blanking on the titles. As always, I'm here for your suggestions, but also if you need recs for the readers in your life--or yourself--you can comment below or hit my up in the chat!
