Today is fun, because we've continued on the theme of "the air is poison." So I wobble between being swamped with anxiety over being behind on everything and feeling too sick from the air to care. It's fun! I do not recommend it.
Smalls is also home sick--he has a cold--but it's the "just sick enough that I don't want to infect other children, but well enough to interrupt me every five seconds to ask if he can play with friends" kind of sick. The timing is poor to say the least.
It seems like the perfect time to talk about zombie wranglers and dead things, tbh. I did a short video on TikTok recently covering books with necromancers, so a lot of these titles are from there, but you're getting bonus titles. Woot woot! Some of these I've read, some are on my TBR, and I'll mark them accordingly.
Dead Things by Stephen Blackmoore--this is the first in the Eric Carter series and I've mentioned it on here before. It's gritty, noir style fantasy that I enjoyed a whole lot. Eric makes really poor choices, but you totally understand why. Full transparency--I consider Stephen a friend. I would like this series even if he was, well, not my mortal enemy, but someone I didn't like very much.
The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong--this is the first book in the young adult Darkest Powers series and I've read it about 800 times. Okay, maybe not that much, but it's been a lot. You don't have to read her adult series to jump into this one, but there are some little hints and things you'll know if you have read her Otherworld books.
Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews--this is the first book in the Kate Daniels series. Kate isn't a necromancer, but there are necromancers in the series, and it's a cool take on the necromancer/vampire dynamic. Plus, I just love this series. FYI, the original covers on this series are mostly terrible, so ignore them and try it anyway.
Gideon the Ninth by Muir--This has been on my TBR for an embarrassingly long time, but a lot of readers I know *love* it. It was pitched to me as "lesbian necromancers in space." Sold.
Saint Death's Daughter by Cooney--I just picked this one up. It looked funny and frankly I liked the cover.
The Library of the Dead by Huchu--Another one on my TBR, but my mom promptly stole it when I brought it home, so I bought the sequel as well. She had really good things to say. She doesn't like books that are bleak, too dark, or creepy, so if that sounds like you, check this one out.
Cemetery Boys by Thomas--young adult and another one that everyone raves about and has assured me I would love. (And again, that cover!) Someday soon I will rescue it from my TBR.
Guilty Pleasures by Hamilton--so this is an older series and it used to be one of my favorites. (Despite having a book in it that I have to skip over because there's a scene I can't handle.) At one point, the series took a turn that wasn't bad or anything, but it made me lose interest. This isn't me knocking the series or the writing or anything like that. People still love it. So if it sounds good to you, I say give it a go!
The Last Necromancer by Archer--first book in a series and another book languishing in my TBR. I'm fairly certain this one is another series that my mom liked, though, and she's got good taste. Ha!
Sabriel by Nix--Okay, so to be honest, I didn't finish this one. Not sure why? People freaking love Nix. I think I just wasn't in the mood for this book at the time. The writing was good, and the take on necromancy very unique. It's worth checking out.
Three Parts Dead by Gladstone--I've been side eying this one for awhile and keep meaning to read it. Have any of you read it? Let me know what you think!
That's it for now. If you have any favorite necromancers that I've missed, post in the comments! (I know this isn't all of them!)
