October video: Conspiracy physics

This was a real journey. I'm not going to make physics videos for a bit. Maybe more muppet stuff. Sorry if this is upsetting.

Don't comment on the link I think I am going to publish this one later in the day for general audiences.

October video: Conspiracy physics

Comments

Angela, I'm a little late on this video, but I want you to know that I don't watch or listen to very much physics content because most of it pisses me off. I love the science content you put out because it doesn't just talk shit about science and is in line with the research I do (in some ways). I had never heard of Sabine before you mentioned her and it is unfortunate that you get lumped into the same category as her. I'm sorry this happened to you! I really love your science content.

UPDATE: it’s not just you!! I wanted to let you know, Patreon just recommended Sabine to me in the “Creators For You” section, and it specifically said it was recommending it because I’m a Patron of Sean Carroll. 😐 (For anyone who doesn’t know, Sean Carroll is a real physicist, basically above reproach in my view lol, I’ve followed his work for 15-20 years, he’s absolutely the real deal, written a lot of super interesting papers and books and his Mindscape podcast features all kinds of thinkers in all kinds of disciplines, and his AMAs are fantastic. His Biggest Ideas in the Universe series on YT was exceptional!) All that to say, Angela, I suspect you wouldn’t imagine Sean Carroll or his work is lessened by this association. I am quite certain he is no fan of her nonsense. So, I know a little time has passed since you made this video, but I thought that was a good example of how all these algorithms just shove her at anyone who engages with any Physics content whatsoever.

Lisa

I have just recently started watching your content. And it led to a new recommendation in my feed: Sabine Hossenfelder. The algorithm gods know what the people want it seems.

As a long time subscriber who does in fact watch Red Letter Media, and had no idea who Sabine was until you mentioned her on your video, I wanted to join with everyone else and say that your audience isn't comprised of just physics haters. I really despise that type of content (read: They Wont Even Look Through The Telescope), and have found your videos to join the niche of youtubers talking about how much they love things (Lady Emily, Summoning Salt, Jan Misali, The Morbid Zoo, etc), and wanting to share their passion and knowledge with an audience. I hope that your channel metrics, and generic anti-physics comment sections don't turn you away from producing the kind of videos you like to make. I would be sad to loose your voice because of the ever-dominant cynical and pessimistic feeling of the internet. Its creators like you that make YouTube a place thats worth watching. On a personal note, my step-brother is an astrophysicist, and I have always found his work sort of inscrutable. Your videos have given me a shared language with which I can communicate with him. I have a very rudimentary understanding of what he does, but I’m learning what questions to ask to get him to start gushing about how cool his work is. So, I can confirm that your physics videos have done some good.

another note about people who subscribe to, in particular, both you and Sabine. You had sorta touched on the fact that her content used to be completely different years ago.. I would wonder how many people that are subscribed to both, are like me.. Years ago, saw an interesting science video from a woman who seemed charismatic and knowledgeable, and subscribed, always hungry for new, good science content. I literally just checked and I am still subscribed to that turd, (JUST UNSUBBED HER) despite not having watched a video of hers in years, and repeatedly clicking “not interested” to the extent that the algorithm has not suggested her to me at ALL in years. So idk if your metrics indicate what subset ACTIVELY WATCHES her content, but just as you will need reminding in December about WSJ, it’s just so human nature to forget to unsubscribe from something that sucks or you don’t need. Even more so if it’s out of sight out of mind and not costing you money. I was 100% certain I’d deliberately unsubscribed to her years ago after a particularly stanky, bad faith video that indicated quite clearly she was happy to dupe people, and even hurt people. Whelp, my dumb ass has apparently been among her subscribers this whole time, bc it just isn’t a thing where I think about visiting some turd’s page to deliberately unsub them, instead I just reject their content until I never hear from them again. Lesson to me to be more deliberate. And perhaps this can account for some of that disturbing overlap you noted, some portion.

Lisa

Let's be fair, the whole climate change "debate" brought a lot of conspiracy science out of the woodwork. Then Covid just made it exponentially worse somehow. So much anti-science "science" communication out there.

Hello, I enjoyed this and rejoined to say thank you. Like others below I have mixed feelings about Sabine, but this is right on the money, she has become a troll for money.

The reveal of the "Channels your audience watches" is hilarious

Lovro Grgic

I love your physics videos. While I was at one time a subscriber of Sabine, I left after seeing your "crackpots" video. It made me question whether her pottery was damaged and so I unsubscribed. None of my science channels are people with cracked pots. And as far as people leaving stupid comments and not being able to comprehend the point -- it's the Internet and there's no shortage of people who confidently post utter shite. I mean, this is the dumbest timeline -- we elected a convicted felon as president after he tried to overthrow the government last time. And you're surprised at your comments? I couldn't understand how people failed to see he was a grifter and a con, but then I'm autistic and often don't understand people. They're so illogical.

I think a lot of the comments that are disheartening to you could be people thinking they are being funny. So many people, especially younger people, feel like being a little edgy is what will get them attention. Or they think you will get that they aren't being serious, somehow, with no indication from them. Do what you need to do, but to me it is extremely valuable that people who care about the real science share their love of it.

I just became a member to give you back a small fraction of the value you’ve given me over the years! I found you from your Binding of Isaac video, but I knew I liked you especially when I saw your first gen video and sexual harassment video. Your videos are a great service to the community. Hope you feel better soon.

Fubuki Lake

When you return to physics videos, I'd love to see more Coffee And A Problem stuff. I'm sure the algo hates them, but I enjoy them.

Thanks for your comment on SH. While Prof. Dave had valid points, he is a bulldozer who works well with trolls or obvious grifters, but not so much with SH, who talked about the problems and misogyny that affected her. I felt uncomfortable that he, as a man, was talking about her, even though his tone was more subdued compared to his videos about others.
