If you've been following my previous work, you may recall some experiments with prebaked cubemap distortion effects. While that project offered decent results, I decided to spend more time investigating realtime distortion rendering. A few months later, we've got a working prototype mod! I'll be announcing the project in the coming days, here's a sneak-peak of the upcoming trailer.
Using similar techniques to the PC version, these walls aim to offer good visual quality at a reasonable level of performance. The mod required performing some "hacks" to overcome some unity rendering issues with android devices. While not perfect, this approach enabled the distortion effects to be much more scalable, allowing users to choose between multiple quality settings.
For now, the distortion mod is available to patrons with the Tester tier. Note that there are still some visual issues which need to be looked into before a public release can be made. For instance, distortions may appear incorrect across both eyes due to some workarounds required to achieve the effect. I'd like to investigate new techniques and integrate custom-made shaders to find a good balance between quality, performance and eye-friendliness.
