Tech Update

My editing computer acted up for the first time since its inception 3 years ago. It's been starting in Safe Mode only. Having gone through every possible test/fix on my own and with Apple support, down to a clean install of the OS, everything pointed to a hardware issue. But today IT STARTED UP FINE. And kept starting up fine as if there was never any problem.

So I'm time-machining my whole setup back onto the drive and hopefully the computer will continue to work.

I'm glad at least this happened in-between videos!

On an unrelated note, does anyone in the production art pledge level want the "creepy" Holly poster from last episode in high rez? Just trying to gauge interest...

I assumed something of that nature. It has been on for long stretches, rendering tough stuff. I dusted it off a bit inside in attempts to fix it originally. Fingers crossed.

I've been using a juvenile system of just keeping the camera cards with the footage untouched throughout editing as an insurance policy but not backing it up otherwise. But my edit projects, etc. are in dropbox so they're recoverable. This year I'm going to switch to a RAID 1 drive. Yes, I keep all the footage from every shoot.

The prop was cobbled together in a hurry to look just decent enough for the shoot. The individual tiles started to peel away from the frame after a few days so I just tore them all off and threw them away, sorry!

Definitely hardware, but most of the intermittent ones are heating related. Either occouring at the time of over heating, or occouring randomly due to previous heat damage. One step you should take is to make sure you dismantle it as far as you dare to, and clean out as much dust from any vents and fans as you can. This can magically solve the problem if you've caught it early enough.

The poster is too scary for me! What do you use to backup all your videos/footage? I use Amazon Web Services with the Glacier class storage in S3 for super long term backups, as well as using a little NAS unit in a spare room. Do you keep your unused footage forever, or do you scrap it after the project is done? Same for all the raw footage too.

I don't know if you'd give the prop away as a gift (maybe low-key thought it would be a wonderfully hilarious), but a highrez poster would be a fine thing to have (for the creepy rooms in your house)

Holly is NEVER creepy, and I’d be interested. Pineal eye or not.

Dear CD, invest some time and resources in proper backup. Remember - three is two, two is one, one is none.

Beware of intermittent hardware problem. They have a nasty habit of reappearing when least welcome. If your OS clean install still had problems, it may be time to invest in a new machine.

That might be kinda kool...
