SWT: Criticism and Curation

That post was broken up in to paragraphs but apparently Patreon doesn't give a rats arse.

I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of criticism but this is a problem for even more established industries. Take a look at movies for example and there are quite a large amount of fantastic independent releases. But most modern reviewers of note all stay within the Hollywood blockbuster machine. While I agree idealistically, I don't have any faith that critics will provide any reasonable degree of variability, at least in the more popular realms. I think there are two possibilities to the curation problem. 1. Along the criticism line is people like yourself and Superbunnyhop. These are, for lack of a better term, reviews of a more specific set of games. Its not that you never touch AAA titles, but there is a healthy mix and it helps. For the most part the same criticism aspects can be leveled to both styles of games. Having an encouraged, independent healthy mix is key. Few have it, and I don't trust sadly anyone who is looking to make this kind of thing a full time job enough to do it elsewise. We've seen the paid for reviews, blocked access and all of that jazz and to be extreme about it, popular ad driven sites with full time games journalists have betrayed the common trust enough for me to not trust them wholesale. 2. Social curation. Its not so much about limiting what is on the platform, but work needs to be done towards higher weighting of friends gaming choices and arguably follow those whose opinions you trust. Inevitably the market will fall still along populist lines but a lot would scope out their own people to follow that run in line with their interests. Its a hard issue, but I don't think any kind of active involvement needs to take place but, moreover weighting content display in favor of some knowable and user adjusted heuristics.
