New Short Episode: Mods!

Hey all! This is the first of the short form episodes that were made possible thanks to all of you! Yay! Though having completed this one I suspect subsequent such episodes would either be A) Much shorter or B) Much more freeform and lackadaisical instead of highly edited ES episodes. This took getting footage from modded Skyrim, modded GTAIV, and a *bunch* of title cards and was closer to a half-episode of Errant Signal than a quick blip on the side. Anyways, let me know what you think - I'm eager to hear your thoughts!

New Short Episode: Mods!

I hope this episode goes online for the general public, soon. Do you know a game where mods actually improved the games link between mechanic and story/experience?

Is the game 'modded' as soon as a player interacts with it? I think the way that a game is experienced in most cases is dramatically different than any other media is experienced by consumers. The second by second activity of watching Blade Runner Directors Cut is exactly the same no matter who sees it. But playing Skyrim, 'un-modded' will be completely different; from pace, to weapons, skill level, decisions, story, dialogue, weather, amount of time taken are completely different, even though the bits downloaded and installed are the same. That doesn't invalidate or make useless any criticism, critique or experience anyone has with the game. Its like saying your perspective insights and critique about life, in particular my circumstances, are not valid because you have not lived my life; but you have lived, and your opinions are valid. They may be stupid or wrong, but they may also be enlightening, accurate to the truth, and right. Maybe its a stretch to use that analogy, but its reductive criticism of modded games, especially if they are designed to be modded... patched, improved, dlc'ed, etc. However, I don’t disagree with you; something is almost always lost to time as games get older and technology and culture evolve. Anyone who grew up on modern games will probably never play System Shock the way the original audience did.

I'm sure whatever length format you decide will still have a lot say. I can't imagine mods are anything but a configuration nightmare and that time can add up. Thanks for the update.
