Hello everyone. I hope you all are having an amazing day ❤️
Today you'll be getting a picture tutorial on how i make scars. More exact horse scars.
First of, human and horse scars do look a bit different, especially during the healing process. Mainly because of their coat, as well as their skin, as it is of course different to a human skin as it grows a thick fur out of it. So that is an important factor when searching for refs. Look up animal scars.
Scars will also form differently depending on the wound. How deep the wound was, where the wound was located on the body, how well it was looked after during the healing process etc.
Because of the horse skin color under the fur will it also look different. The majority of horses have a darker skin color under their fur. Double creams (like cremello) do not however, they have almost pink.
Scars can come in different forms and types. But I'll be showing three.
The ancient scar
This scar is that type of scar that either takes forever to heal, or just won't heal anymore than this. Fur also have it hard to grow over because of the scar over the skin. The skin is just too damaged.

1. I start off with the shape and a greyish color as the scar have made so the skin have lost much of its pigments.

2. I then adds a bit of tiny white dots/strokes inside as dry skin off the scar.

3. I then highlight the outside as the scar will still be "under" the fur that is around it. I color pick a light color from the horse and just makes that color a tiny bit brighter and do a bit blending to it if i think it looks better.

4. But as the scar also is under the fur do it need a bit of shadow. I put the shadow over the scare base, but under the highlight. I use just a dark muted color. Color pick from the coat and make it darker or more muted.

5. I then color pick from the fur and draw fur strokes around and a bit over the scar, to frame it in. If you've a fur brush can you try to use it for this step, or just blend the strokes so it fades in with the coat.
And it is done!
The fresh scar
It might look more like a wound than a scar. But with only changing the base color to more dark and muted with time, will it look like it is turning more and more into a scar. With time will it turn into the ancient scar, or that you can make it smaller and smaller until it will completely heal.

1. Start with a pink light color as flesh is a bit of that just under the skin. This is the color you can change with time.

2. Color pick a dark color from the coat and turn it a bit more greyish, this will be the shadow inside of the scar at the top, but i also put it under the scar of the outside of it.

3. I then color pick a light color from the coat and make it a bit brighter. I put it over the scar and inside at the bottom of the scar. I also blended it a bit.

4. I added a few dark red dots, strokes and things inside of the scar to give a bit more contrast.

5. Then as with the other scar, color pick around the scar to draw fur brush strokes. Done!
The lightning scar
These scars are a bit hard to make as they might look a bit wonky up close. But more zoomed out do they look pretty ok. So I still want to show you how i make them.
The lightning scars looks a bit like the horse got shot by a lightning bolt from the shape they create when they are trying to heal from the wound.

1. With a greyish color as the base do you make the shape of a lightning bolt or simillar. Color pick a light color from the coat, make it a bit brighter and draw some stroke here and there in the middle of the base. Blend if you think it is needed.

2. Color pick a dark color and make it a bit muted and draw shadows both inside and around the scar.

3. Color pick a light color from the coat and make it brighter and add highlights over and under the scar. I blend the highlight it a bit here.
I then added a bit more shadows inside of the scar

4. Light color again and draw very delicate lines in the middle of the scar.

5. Added a bit more highlights over the scar and under and blurred it out.

6. Then the color pick fur thing over and around and blured a bit.

You can ofc also try to change the opacity of all these scars, it will looks the best with the last type of scar, like here ⬆
I hope you find this tutorial useful ❤️
