Tutorial/speed painting - Wavy mane
Added 2023-01-30 14:00:02 +0000 UTCHello and I hope you're having a great Monday!
Here comes my very first (ever even actually) speed painting. I got a question if i could show how I make wavy hair/mane.
First of; I do use other brushes when i make hair. But as I've had them for a long time and have no idea where i got it, so did i use hair brushes from a new pack Cath is working on for this speed painting. I'm not too familiar with these brushes (as i'm so used to use the ones i use..damn to many "use" lol), so excuse me for that. But the technique is the same. I make a new layer for everything I do and I use a clipping mask to the base layer from every new layer.
1. Base
Just as it says, I make the base layer. I used "The softest hair" from the pack and used very wavy motions to create a wavy shape.
As you can see so do I "wing it" with the shape. Not always, but honestly so do i do it most times.
2. Dark details
You won't see this step that much in the end results, but it is still visible if you put the layer on and off at the end.
I basically just draw wavy strokes, however not all the way down. This is to help give the mane more strukture. So i draw a wavy stroke, stop, and make a new one where i ended the first but try to place the new one a bit overlaping the first. They can be how short or long you want them to be, and as much space between them to. Just play around.
3. Light details
I do basically the same as with step 3, but i try to somewhat place/draw them where there's empty space, does it make sense? This step will you howver so a lot in the end results.
4. Shadows
I draw/messy fills in the empty spaces with a dark shade to create depth and more contrast, I then use gaussian blur smudge it out a bit. I also played around with the blending mode to make it a bit darker.
5. Highlights
With the same brush, but a lighter shade, do i make like dots-ish strokes at places where i made the light highlights. I try to dot/draw it on places that looks like it could be a higher point and slightly draw them in rows to help create the wavy effect. I then use the smudge tool to blend them out i bit. I use downward motions that are more short than long.
I then played around with the blending modes to make it a bit lighter. I also made a copy of the layer but with a lower opacity.
6. Big wavy shadows
To help even more to create a wavy effect. Same brush but with a dark shade am I making very wavy motions kind of inbetween the highlights. I then use gaussian blur to blur it out a bit.
I then blurred out the duplicate highlight layer and made the opacity higher.
Next step did i forgot to put a text stamp on. But i used "Dynamic details" to draw some loose wavy strands a bit everywhere, both with a dark and a light color.
So there you have it! I hope it can be to any help.
