More Soldering Tips And Tricks To Make Circuit Board Building Easy!

Comments

We recently had a "refresher course" on lead-free soldering at work and the guy who taught the course also recommended a bent tip. And I have to say, I LOVE BENT TIPS! It's like multiple sizes of tip in one, depending on how you hold it. You can solder 0402 and huge 1206 packages without needing to change tips. It is really great. About the fumes: Why do "unhealthy" things always smell so nice? About that "sheet" that you use to prevent things from moving around: That is a biiiig NO because of ESD (yes, I am really paranoid about ESD). Yes, SMD is nice but I build 99% of my projects on perfboard so I need to use breakout boards or adapters whenever I use SMD ICs. But I recently got my first boards made and I used only SMD on those because they needed to be really "thin". I have some experience with soldering SMD from work but I prefer THT components for my personal projects. But I might try your PCB-etching-at-home method at some point in the future.

I’ve been curios, perhaps Paul has touched on this but I haven’t seen it…but has anyone found a solid, effective fume control solution? I’ve heard that the cheaper carbon type vents are negligible in terms of their effectiveness, I’ve also heard/read that extremely expensive commercial ventilation systems are the only real way to control fume inhalation. At any rate, I would love to hear if people have a good process or solution for keeping the stuff out of the eyes and lungs! Any DIY vacuums, fans, whatever is working well for you please let me know! Many thanks!!!
