1060 Hybrid Project Comes to a Close
Added 2016-07-26 02:19:26 +0000 UTCWe learned a lot with the GTX 1060 Hybrid project. That's the whole goal of these -- with a high-end card, like the 1080, we might expect some performance gains or greater OC headroom. For the lower-end stuff, we're really just trying to learn more about the product itself; that starts with a tear-down, analysis of components, and re-build with some new components.
In the process, though, we did learn that the overclock stability was greatly increased with liquid -- or just better cooling, period. We were able to sustain a stable 2151.5MHz OC, rather than a 2088-2151.5MHz variable range. We also learned that the GTX 1060 seems limited in its power consumption, as stability greatly increases with an extra +16% power target over base. The MSI card didn't have this same problem, and also managed to draw fewer volts to sustain a comparable clock. We think that's a mix of PCB design/layout and cooling.
Anyway, cool stuff. I'm personally excited to stop GPU reviews for a few days, though; we'll be working on an In Win 303 case review next. I actually genuinely like this case. I normally dislike cases for personal machines in general -- I like working with an open bench -- but this one, I'd use this in a system. Running the thermal analysis tonight.
