My parents were both children of the upper South. Arkansas precisely. Born in the late 20's, growing up in the 1930's, they experienced the depression firsthand. Dad's family farmed but he wanted to be a writer or an artist. Mom's family were educators and that was also her calling. Both managed to go to and complete college degrees. My dad was a Goldwater republican and racist who fought in Korea and told me in 1970 that if I got drafted and wanted to go to Canada, he would help make that happen. He smoked like a stack and drank like a fish and died from a massive coronary in 1972. At the time of his death, he was head of a university's fund-raising department. My mom started out as fairly conservative but was always a free thinker who taught and learned almost all her life, traveled the world and eventfully becoming a pretty far left liberal. A retired high school and college course teacher. she passed away at the age of 89. I actually learned a lot from both of them (both really very intelligent people) and hopefully I took the best I could and became a better person for it.
