Christopher Jackson (Mr. Softy) played Bennie in the original on broadway production and Lin played Usnavi so having them come back in the movie is so fun. The original broadway show was based in the early 2000’s so having the movie touch on more modern issues was wonderful. Not having Nina’s mom was kinda sad for me because her song in the musical is so powerful. There are water eggs through the movie that go back to the broadway production. Some of the instrumental songs in the backgrounds were from the musical that had been cut from the movie. I would highly recommend listening to the original broadway recording. It’s so fun.

AND Anthony Ramos who plays Usnavi in the movie, played John Laurens/ Hamiltion's son Phillip in the original cast of Hamilton. Lin really stays loyal to his people

It just perfectly encapsulates the difficulty of continuing what your parents/ancestors started and dreamed of, and how hard it is to carry on, yet the strength of pushing through. Also sad Troy didn’t appreciate Usnavi’s “JEALOUS, I AIN’T JEALOUS, I CAN TAKE ALL THESE FELLAS, WHATEVA”. 😂

I would have loved hearing Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace sing "Sunrise". Also "Everything I know" is one of the most tear jerking songs ever put on stage. They included the music as background but I wish we got to hear it. ALSO: Troy, you should watch the Filmed Production of Newsies!

For example in the original show, the mural painting was of abuela and I feel like that was a more meaningful way to tie it all together. Great movie regardless. I liked how they added all the stuff about being undocumented since that's a lot of peoples reality these days

2025-09-29 15:28:19 +0000 UTCThis is in case you decide to check out the broadway version of the soundtrack, there are a lot more songs in it, and some changes were made for the movie. For example, when you listen to blackout, it is entirely different. It is a lot more terrifying and scary, you can feel the panic in the first minute of the song. Benny and Nina was supposed to sing the argument part Usnavi and Vanessa did in blackout but changed it, I assumed bc it made sense that they fought instead. Upon hearing that Nina’s dad sold the building, Benny lost his job and actually blamed her, which thought was honestly childish. I actually appreciate that they changed it for the movie, imo. It just felt right for the settings.

It’s a practical rotating set and the dance moves are what help disguise the set being moved, not the CGI. There’s only one other major film to do this for a dance (Royal Wedding with Fred Astaire) BUT it’s famous for Johnny Depp’s death in A Nightmare on Elm Street! It’s likely the set was the fire escape and a blue/green screen for the NY scenery.

So when Lin recorded, he was listening to own vocals from the original recording to get the harmony right when they sing together. I still love the movie though and I think they added a lot of good things, but the musical has a couple more songs and there’s a bit more focus on Benny and Nina! It’s Lin’s first musical! didn’t get to see it on Broadway but saw a fantastic high school production when I was younger! :) my sister saw it off Broadway and I’m insanely jealous! Abuela Claudia is the same actress from the Broadway production and she also voices the grandma in Encanto bc Lin stays loyal to making sure his friends stay employed 🙂↕️

The movie changed some pacing and removed some b-plot songs or rearranged them. Abuela Claudia's story is more spread out and she cashes out the lotto ticket before she dies and gives the money to Usnavi to keep safe during the blackout. They had to change some lyrics because they changed up the timing. But even with all that, it's so good! I'm always so impressed with the choreography of the movie. Like the pool scene in 96,000? Absolutely wild.

(He recognizes his limits as a singer and has said he wrote himself out of playing Burr but into Hamilton. Usnavi is his character and he's fantastic in it.) Chris Jackson (Mr Softee) is the original Benny and George Washington. Lin's parents are getting out of the cab and wave and Nina during Breathe. The actor who originated the role of Vanessa (named after Lin's actual wife, though they weren't married yet when it was on Broadway) is KO and Lin has said in interviews that he wrote the role of Angelica in Hamilton to tempt them back to Broadway. It didn't work at first, but KO eventually performed the role in Chicago. Mandy Gonzalez (Bway Nina) has also played Angelica. My favorite song of hers ("Everything I Know") was cut and you should go listen to it. I sob. Every time. And the actor who originated Sonny on Broadway, Robin de Jesus, played Michael in Tick Tick Boom when Lin directed the film version of that. Oh, and of course, Anthony Ramos was John Laurens and Hamilton's son Philip. He also plays the lead in 21 Chump Street which Lin wrote for This American Life. You can watch it at the link below. 2025-09-26 04:23:18 +0000 UTCit still upsets me that so many things were changed from the original stage production. i know not every thing can work and translate from stage to screen but some of the changes just didn’t make sense — nina’s mother is in the original production and i love the way she balances out nina’s father. she’s always there to call him on his shit and help him try to see things from nina’s perspective, there was a song with usnavi and abuela that was cut when she tells him about the lotto win, my favorite nina song was also cut. there was just so much changed that i still prefer the stage production. i saw it on broadway when corbin bleu played usnavi but nothing compares to the original cast. i really hope you’ll find some time to watch some recordings of the original broadway cast because they were fantastic!

They built a wall with all the balconies and windows that they would tilt from vertical to lying flat and then tilt back again at the end of the dance. So actually, practical effects for that!! so no cuts, just a lot of camera tricks and green screens for the sky and other buildings

2025-09-26 03:32:35 +0000 UTCLove this movie but the original Broadway version has a subplot that I feel was very important and is not included in the movie version. The biggest thing they leave out is the tension between Benny and Nina’s father, Kevin. Kevin disapproves of Benny because he is not Latino and there is some conflict from that. Benny being Black in a predominantly Latino community highlights that even in communities of color, there is still colorism and anti-blackness. A few songs were taken out because they decided to remove this subplot (Sunrise and Enough). Also, Nina’s mom is alive in the original Broadway version and there is a bit more background and her parents have a bit more background and context provided (especially her dad in the song Inútil). Last thing is in the original show, the audience discovers that Abeula is the one with the winning lottery ticket much sooner. Overall, I think the movie stays fairly true to the original show and both are good but the Broadway version has more background on the characters and provides more context.

Abuela Claudia songs being moved/cut and not having the lottery reveal be earlier. Also justice for Nina’s mom because she has a FANTASTIC SONG. But genuinely this is a decent and underrated musical adaptation. Loved your reaction to this!!!

I'm a big fan of the musical and while I think the movie is good, it removed so many things I loved about the original musical 😔 I wish Abuela Claudia got more powerful moments and that Nina had all her songs.
