Spruance DD Ship Brief

The Design, Construction, and Operations of the Spruance-class DD.

Spruance DD Ship Brief

Comments

As an STG-1, I would have reup’d to get on a Spruance class ship. I did 6 years active duty polluting the Pacific with pings from an SQS-23 sonar. Subs had to come to periscope depth for us to find them during ASW exercise torpedo and Asroc launches. Operating a useful sonar would have been awesome. Your brief is more information than I got while on active duty. Not one attempt was made to keep me in the Navy. I hope management’s skill was better on subs.

Are you able to listen to the mp3 link in the post below at least?

USS Obannon DD 987 and USS John Rogers DD983 I was on both we were not DDG that is the Burke class. That are DDGs. Great job on this.

Still no audio on my ipad :(

Sadly, Patreon hasn't been letting me scroll down far enough. It hits a certain point and when I click more, it gives me another copy of the same set it just gave me.

Kristin

I think that was the plan, but they never built it. Who knows.

it scales by the difference in size, so a small ship will be more affected by larger and larger ships.

I concur, there's a real sparseness of video and audio media that goes into any real detail about the Zumwalt class. It's a fascinating vessel with a ton of promise, but probably too many concurrent technology acquisitions causing a ridiculous cost. Great topic for a video I'd say.

That's a very true statement! With cold weather, even below 0⁰ C, it's possible to bundle up in warm clothing, wear blanket(s), or start a gas or log fire to get comfortable. But there's nothing most people can do when the air temperature is in the 33-38⁰ C (91-100⁰ F) range with >90% humidity, stagnant air, and direct sunlight at tropical latitudes. Even swimming pools get hot and uncomfortable at tropical latitudes in the Summer! Most air conditioning units can't keep up either. Also, thanks for the awesome Spruance DD brief, I loved it! :D

Does the "suction" effect when getting really close to another vessel scale with ship size? I remember taking a ride with the Swedish Heritage Flotilla, which operates a few motor torpedo boats. One thing these guys do is maneuver their boats within a few feet of each other at 40+ knots to simulate what an actual attack formation would have been like back in the day. Not much margin for error there, especially at those speeds.

There is a whole Subbrief on the Gotland class ink. the those exercises. You need go way down the feed

Can I make a future (Ship?) Brief suggestion? In the vain of the Australian Attack Class submarine's tumultuous origins, why not the Zumwalt Class destroyer of the USN? Maybe it's too recent for you. Can just cover the procurement/politics side of things, not any hush-hush technology. Below is a link to a video covering the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evmXu3-VUek

SQS-53/89 + ASROC = not cute (for a submariner)

Andrew MacDougall

DDH = more helos. Would it have carried 4?

Andrew MacDougall

I noticed that when the Foster became a test ship, the radars were upgraded. The SPS-40 was removed and an SPS-49 installed on the foremast and an SPS-48 3D radar was added to the aftermast.

Paul D Berkebile

Have you considered doing something on the exercises with the Gotland submarine?

Kristin

You have to watch the video from safari. That’s the only workaround I’ve discovered.

It's been very cold this month. Still better than a Florida summer.

Aaron Amick

How's that Michgan winter treating Capt Jive. The Lansing area has had a crummy month.

Johnny Turbo

This was a lot faster than "end of the month."

No audio when I try to watch on my ipad
