Side note, they have very heavily implied that the King was using Lelouch as bait for C.C. So I think that was the use, and why he didnt just dispose of him. Thats why Lelouch had like a bunch of effectively secret service guys spying on him all the time.

But the one I find important, from the dub, is that when they were fighting the gold robot, Urabe mentioned them being disposable. Lelouch's response was more like "No you aren't disposable, you are all important and we can't win if you sacrifice yourself". Which was said surprisingly earnestly when we consider who said it. That is why they showed a shot of Kallen looking a bit surprised. And then when Urabe died, he said something like "I believe you when you say we arent disposable but..." and then sacrificed himself.
