Thanks for recommending this, I really liked it. Midnight Mass turned out to be absolutely not to my taste, so I really appreciated how this film handled a not-dissimilar premise with such economy and good taste. Was really satisfying, bravo to the filmmakers.

2025-02-26 00:12:17 +0000 UTCPossible spoilers: I think you missed a bit of dialogue explaining their relationship to the mainland. You had to piece it together from bits of conversation. They mostly lived in isolation from the mainland during that first scene. After those first events, like the very beginning of the 9 year jump, they agreed the best response to the miracle discovery was: 1) making him mayor and 2) everyone committing never to return to mainland. This agreement was an exchange for protection of and access to their new "resource." A beautiful portrayal of inescapable greed created by good people caught in a tension between loyalty and self preservation.

I can even find an old Facebook post from Cineplex saying that tickets for the movie were on sale. Strange that there is no reported revenue from Canada unless they sold literally 0 tickets
