Agreed! Kate should have been more honest certainly, but I have a huge amount of empathy for her. Edwina all but demanded her active help in winning Antony, despite Kate's warnings and knowing her sister disliked him. 'Spend the day with him, dance with him, talk to him.' Antony almost kissed her twice yet he proposes right in her face. She's being crushed in the middle of what the two of them want and it hurts to watch. She didn't ask for Antony's regard and tried everything to avoid it, yet she's made the villian for not articulating what she could barely acknowledge without feeling she was failing in her sisterly duty. Bad for all involved but I hate that Kate takes the brunt of the heat. Antony should have never proposed, plain & simple.

Agree with all of this! People tend to forget that as audience members, we’re privvy to information that other characters are not which leads to a lack of empathy for certain decisions and choices that are made and the motivations behind them.

Ngl, as much as I feel bad for Edwina and wish everyone had just been more honest with her from the start, I also get pretty frustrated thinking about how she ignored every single one of Kate’s warnings about Anthony throughout the first two episodes. And it’s not just that Kate had told her that Anthony doesn’t believe in love but the fact that Anthony had told her the same thing himself at the poetry reading. And then I remember she’s still just an 18 year old girl who has never really experienced any real burden or responsibility in her entire life and remains a hopeless dreamer. It’s sweet, but it does speak to her age and naivety. And that’s kind of why things like her scolding her sister about treating her like a little kid makes me roll my eyes, tbh. Kate might not be going about things the best way (she definitely isn’t, lol), but it’s clear that she chooses her sister’s happiness over her own time and time again. She truly believes everything she’s doing is what’s best for her family — it’s obvious from that final scene that she believes everything will be okay so long as she supresses all of her wants and desires, which is heartbreaking in itself. Messy drama aside, Kate and Anthony’s slow burn is so 🔥🔥🔥!! Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley’s chemistry is insane.

This is an interesting perspective that I hadn’t previously considered. I’ve been trying to be kinder to Kate on my rewatches of season 2 but I always struggle to separate my feelings as a sister. My sister is 14 months older than me and my best friend so I just can’t imagine not being honest with her and wanting more for her than a man who will always see her as second best. At this point Anthony has almost kissed Kate 3 times. I would just want a more honourable man for my sister and would’ve let her know what he is like after the bee encounter so I have a hard time sympathizing with Kate. I also think they did a disservice by not including more of Kate’s backstory. If we’re supposed to believe that she’s always felt like second fiddle to Edwina or that she somehow had to earn Mary’s love then that dynamic should’ve been explored more. As it is, all we see is Lady Mary constantly emphasizing that she sees both her daughters the same and thinks they are equally worthy of love and affection.

That's an interesting take. I don't see Kate as selfish. For me I feel like Kate loves her family and Edwina in particular so much and she thinks it is her duty to always sacrifice for her wellbeing. Kate also doesn't think she is worthy of love and unfortunately Anthony at this point has only reinforced that for Kate. Anthony met her first but he still chose to chase after Edwina and propose to her knowing there was something between him and Kate. Though we as the audience knows Anthony loves Kate and only pursued Edwina because he is scared of loving Kate. Kate doesn't know that. From Kate's perspective up until the end of episode five Anthony has lust and passion for her, but he has not said anything about love and his actions so far have not proved that he wants Kate beyond lust and passion. So Kate feels once she is gone the lust and passion can fade and Edwina is such a kind and beautiful person that with time, and Kate out of the way, why wouldn't Anthony forget her and fall for Edwina? Is Kate wrong? Absolutely. But I think that is how Kate sees things at the end of episode five.

This episode always breaks my heart for Edwina. Anthony perfectly spells it out for Kate, he will spend his entire marriage wanting her, not Edwina, and Edwina will never know why she’s not enough to make her husband happy. She is dooming her sister to an incredibly lonely life where everyday she feels insufficient and unseen by her husband. I know she’s trying to save Edwina from heartache when she begs Anthony to still marry her, but it would’ve been far kinder to be honest with her. And I can’t help but feel like some of part of her is doing it to save herself from being the bad guy and hurting Edwina, which is kind of selfish.

I really enjoyed your reactions. I like how you all think this situation is impossible and can't happen for Kate and Anthony. Buckle up. The next three episodes are a beautiful emotional rollercoaster ride.
