In the Heights is a personal favorite of mine because it's my neighborhood. I live on the border between the Heights and Inwood, which is usually lumped in with the Heights (and it's the neighborhood where Lin Manuel Miranda lived. I'm closer to the Heights proper than Miranda was, lol.) The subway station from Paciencia y Fe is one of the two options I have to take the local 1 red line downtown. (I usually use the 190th on the A train blue line bc it's the express and skips all of Central Park to get downtown faster). For Rent, I'd actually recommend: 1- The Pack enters that musical universe by watching Tick Tick Boom! first, because a) Andrew Garfield/Spidey sings!, and b) it sets up the proper historical time period to understand Rent and why the kids didn't just do _______, because we now have the very tools and apps anbd things that make Rent a complete anachronism to modern thinking. 2- Don't watch Rent the Movie. Instead go right for the show. Rent on Broadway, or for a freebie option, "Rent - Louder Audio" is free on YouTube and was audio remastered for streaming optimal audio. Reason being that Rent the stage musical was written as a 1990s rock opera, sung all the way through. And Rent the Movie was filmed as a movie musical, which destroys the whole pacing and brilliance of the stage recording, which is more than 'just' a recording of the final broadway cast when Rent was coming off broadway. They integrated the camera crews and allowed on-stage access for closeups and actual cinematography of the shots of the play, sometimes from right on stage next to the performers. The movie "explains", the stage performance "shows". But that's just my 2 cents.
