Storyboards for a future video

I think I'll be recovered more or less by tomorrow or the day after, and came up with a neat idea for how Shard might have been saved IF the Super Genesis Wave never happened.  I'm going to try doing something like Masako X's "What if" series, using storyboards like this to illustrate my ideas.  This is the first half, I got tired before I could draw the rest of the art, but here is the accompanying part of the "script" to help you follow the story:

After their final battle, Shard's power gem (which holds his program) is badly cracked and on the verge of shattering, while Metal is simply rebooted into a new body from the backups in Eggman's super computer.  Metal realized that he basically has infinite continues while Shard only had one life, so self destructing while they were were grappling was the simplest way to deal with him.  But this has dark consequences.  Chuck's team is able to recover what's left of Shard and they extract his damaged gem, getting into a casing that protects it from vibration and other stress so the cracks won't get any worse (I am NOT willing to kill him off!)  A new body can be built, but they can't risk putting the damaged gem into it because the stress of battle or even movement might break it entirely, a power ring can be used as a substitute (reverse engineered from the recovered Mecha-Sally) but the truth is Shard is no longer as powerful as he was before, his abilities are at best on par with Metal Sonic the way he is now.

Metal Sonic starts charging Knothole city at full speed, holding a massive amount of explosives, realizing his body is essentially just a fancy remote drone now he has come up with a kamikaze strategy.  Using his speed and agility to overcome countermeasures he blasts the side of the city, Nicole starts doing damage recovery but another Metal is already on the way, a whole battalions worth of Metal Sonic bodies are waiting in the wings, only one can be operated at a time but with their speed and intelligence they are far more effective than any mere missile could be, and every time one blows up another turns on and picks up where it left off.  A mission is scrambled together to destroy the supercomputer that backs up Metal's consciousness so he can't keep infinitely rebooting himself.  Shard and Sonic go on this mission together since they are the only ones fast enough to get there before Nicole's defenses are overwhelmed.  Upon infiltrating the base Silver Sonic 3 is there to meet them, though not as fast or agile as Metal in the confined space he's effective enough to act as a guardian of the super computer.
