Selfie in Three Parts

A haiku:

Charcoal and paper

Using a mirror I draw

The artist seeing self.

The three parts of the selfie that I regularly post are:

1. A photograph. A real tangible instant photo that I can hold in my hand. These are accumulating in a nice old fashioned photo album. The photograph represents how others perceive me, as it is my own image.

2. A gesture drawing or sketch. Generally created with charcoal on an 18 x24 inch sheet of paper. This is achieved by using  a mirror. Occasionally I switch it up to different mediums and smaller formats when trying to convey a movement or motion that I experienced. Because of the self portraiture nature of these drawings, I am required to look very carefully at myself and therefore they are a representation of how I perceive myself.

3. A haiku. This form of self expression is a bit more challenging for me. But it is exactly the kind of practice I need for concise verbal communication. The haiku represents my inner thoughts and reflections. On both how I am perceived by myself as well as others. Additionally, it expresses what the drawing and the photograph cannot. Each part of the trifecta supporting and building the other parts.

For the purposes of this post, I have also included a photo of how I created this drawing. I simply turned my chair around and used it as a drawing horse bench. This allowed me to include more of the figure for my drawing.
