Tuesday Update: Complain to a Tree
Added 2022-08-16 22:47:51 +0000 UTCI'm off to a busy week! For this Tuesday update, I thought I'd share another installment of the recorded and edited instructions of the Marina Abramovich Method! This instruction involves voicing all my complaints to a tree. As has been the case with most of these exercises, I am surprised by how thought provoking a simple action is.
While I find Abramovich's early work very challenging and uncomfortable, her later work (including all of the instructions included in the book), challenges me on an intellectual level. They walk a line between art, self reflection, and something greater. I find them akin to meditation.
In other work, I've begun making meticulous marks on a large piece with a fountain pen. The background of which will be filled with letters and words, not my usual background of paint! More on that tomorrow!

This! Yes, I really get the fact that as an act one takes, it brings out the futility of simply complaining. What i like here is the instruction's timeframe. Without explicitly saying so, it brings us to a point where we face the complete uselessness of complaining and instead we begin to formulate steps forward. Such wisdom. I also like to thing of the tree being a subtly active participant. She's been there, for decades or centuries, seen epochs ebb and flow and other things simply persist. She's taking our complaints and silently handing them back and saying “well, what will you do now?” Lovely video clip. Always the full experience with you, Rachael
