The CGI in this from 2009 holds up still today and well probably forever. One of the film's greatest strengths is its ability to transport the audience into Pandora's breathtaking landscapes and immerse them in its vibrant ecosystem. From the floating mountains to the bioluminescent flora and fauna, every frame is a visual feast.
The performances in "Avatar" are great, with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana delivering a heartfelt portrayal of Jake Sully and Neytiri. The talented cast, including , Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang, breathe life into their respective characters, making them relatable and engaging. The story was engaging and does you leave you wanting more. Looking forward to the next one.

2023-11-23 05:23:47 +0000 UTCTbh it was very difficult to tell where you guys were while watching the movie since the timer didn't seem to be correct at all. Tried being at the same time the timer was but it was completely off from where you were to the point I got very confused on where you were especally with your reactions to each scene. For example, where Quinn comments that it is going to open its eyes at 00:09:35 (the scene involving the avatars in the tubs of water and stuff), but if you watch the movie to where that time is on the timer, it is actually the scene of Jake coming off of the plane when he arrived on Pandora. Idk but I was very confused on where you were in it and just ended up not watching the rest.

2023-06-02 06:17:35 +0000 UTCFantastic reaction, guys -- and I'm envious of Oak seeing this in 3D (sadly my eyes cannot handle that technology). :) I always wanted one of the six-legged beasts and the dragon-esque creature. Ahhh, if only we could bring such things to life! I saw this is in the cinema when it first came out, and my little eco-loving heart was so full and emotional. The sorry thing is, many people who see this film get all riled up about the destruction of the environment and indigenous peoples in this film -- but fail to act when forests, ecosystems, environments, communities, etc are destroyed here on our planet, even in their own backyards. Hopefully, though, the film will inspire more ecological thinking in some, no matter when they see it. Also... It was interesting to re-watch this again with you all. When I saw this in 1999, I was oblivious to the disability representation in Avatar. Seeing it again, now as a wheelchair user, hurt. I didn't see the implied narrative of wheelchair user = broken = inspirational for just surviving --but must be fixed; fully-able bodies = preferred. All those years ago I didn't appreciate how hurtful it could be to see Jake's consciousness moved from his damaged (therefore less productive/worthless) body to a fully-able (albeit alien) body. Now I do. I love this film, don't get me wrong, but seeing it again now with my shift in perspective was interesting. Thanks again for the reaction, guys! You really are a comfort channel for me. :)

I particularly love it when they venture outside the male canon, because yes, their open-mindedness and enjoyment is so refreshing. Hope they do it more! Some recommendations on that line? (I'm not sure if you might have already watched them before) The Birdcage: ideal for Pride month! It has Robin Williams and it is equally hilarious and sweet. Ex Machina: one of the best recent sci-fi, for my money; a thought provoking, high stakes conversation about AI. Since you liked Arrival, I think you'll enjoy this one a lot.

I mean, the visual effects are certainly impressive, and I'm guessing that the technical part of the industry owes a lot of development to Cameron's obsessions, but... in terms of storytelling? This is as basic as it gets. Which sucks, because we know he can tell a complex story with real characters! T2 is mind blowing in terms of effects, chases and fights, but it also built Sarah Connor into a fierce, complicated, traumatized, aggressive, exhausted, prepared, paranoid, smart, loving, badass woman. How the hell did he go from that to the dull simplistic tropes here?

Its 15mins longer and gives some more background on Jake at the beginning, more information on the tense relationship with the humans & Na'vi, & talks about what happened to Grace's school. Wish you guys would've watched that version but still an amazing reaction as always.

I watched it again for a second time with your guysβ reactions, but I totally lost interest in the movie at the beginning of the climatic ending.

It definitely looks pretty, but I'm more of a story vs visuals person and this one is just space Pocahontas. I think it would have done better as a movie about exploring a whole new alien culture, with much more world building than we got. But all that said, it was definitely better than I remembered it being.

I know you all donβt have that option for the reactions but I canβt imagine trying to watch it on my home tv after seeing it in the theater. It was made for it! Wow!

2023-05-18 14:14:16 +0000 UTCThe main criticism this film faced was that people felt it was very similar to Pocahontas & while I feel that in a way, it was enough of a different story & the visuals were genuinely something next level in 2009, the water scene when Jake jumps off of the cliff in the beginning is one of the most mindblowing to be in how fucking unbelievable the water looks interacting with Jake & the environment. Oak was absolutely correct when he brought up James Cameron waiting to make this until the tech was there & even making some of his own tech just to accommodate his storytelling and I don't want to even remotely spoil the second film, but the second one IMO was MILES BETTER than this in terms of visuals (NOT saying this first one was bad) but adding over a decade to the tech & James Cameron literally CREATING specific technology to help generate/render the water & other visuals in the sequel just use your imagination to try and fathom how much better they are. This was one of the most breathtaking & hard to describe experiences I ever had while in theaters again for IMAX & 3D. Some 3D films are made specifically for 3D & you can TELL they are because it is just JUMPING out at you & it is distracting (Shark Boy & Lava Girl, or Spy Kids 3D I love them both but they were obnoxious in theaters & also a bit too 2D when they didn't have it. This one felt so damn perfect in theaters & also out of theaters, it didn't take away from it being outside of theaters. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE SECOND FILM!!! Highly recommend checking out some of the deleted scenes/special features or docu videos about the making of these films because they are SO INFORMATIVE! A channel called "Corridor Crew" broke down the water scene & why it was so impressive too if you felt like checking that out on your own time :D!

2023-05-17 21:55:12 +0000 UTCThis franchise has always fascinated me, and I look up everything I can about the world they've built because they really created everything. Everything you see on the screen, and even some things you don't, have been fleshed out and has a purpose and a history. It's so expansive that there's always new things to learn, and then you notice small details that reflect that knowledge when you re-watch that you never noticed before. Like even the language they speak is real and they hired experts to create it. Not to mention how it revolutionized the film industry with performance capture for a digital character, whereas before it was motion capture with key animated performances. The technology that enabled Cameron to walk around a set and see the digital world in the camera was also new, and has become a staple now in film. Characters like Thanos were the culmination of this work, and now in Avatar 2 just the facial performances put Thanos to shame only a few years later.

2023-05-17 21:12:57 +0000 UTCAfter watching it in cinema watched 5+ times at home in a span of few weeks and then some. Visual were and still are amazing, but it would be nothing without a heart. The story is simple and done before and i can see now where it is a bit too fast forward at some points (movie is still very long and would take 4 hours to do proper treatment for full development). But you just fall in love with every character and the world. Humor is good and Sam does good delivery of his sarcastic remarks ("he will try to kill you, outstanding"). Sigourney is a blast. What i loved the most is how good emotions were portrayed without talking, with glances, nods, etc. Very life like. And regarding CGI, all the creatures were great, but i was most surprised by lush greenery around. You kind of take it for granted, but every piece of leaf or grass or moss was generated. And how it looks, how it bends when helicopter lands, etc. Mind blowing how much power and time they needed to render everything.

Being the perfectionist that he is, Cameron spent quite an amount of time exploring the underwater. He is an avid water baby and built a submarine to take him to the bottom of the Marina trench. These real-life locations inspired the visual underwater world of Avatar. "Then when we got serious about doing [the] Avatar [sequels], we wrote four scripts β that took a couple of years. Then we had to design the movies. So what weβre trying to do is kind of front-load the whole process, so that we can drop them into the marketplace a couple of years apart β two or three years apart β so once weβre back, weβre back to stay, right? So you can revisit the world and the characters at a regular kind of cadence, right? Thatβs how the game is played, if youβre creating a persistent world, people want it again and they want it again. So, thatβs our game plan.β

That also gives the advantage that the third film already comes out on December 20th 2024, so next year! I think compared to the last time span of 13 years we are very spoiled haha

I remember seeing it in IMAX & 3D & I was blown away back in 2009 when I was a measly 12/13 years old & it still blows me away today! Everyone has already given info about box office numbers & how this blew other competitors out of the water as just a single starting franchise film VS Marvel films that have had 20+ film build ups to their βbig filmsβ Iβm looking forward to the sequel even more though because believe it or not the visuals get EVEN BETTER!!!!!!

Zoe Saldana is The First Actor To Have Four Films Cross The $2 Billion Box Office or more mark. Over $10 billion in all. This one. Star trek 2009, which I love, as Uhura and Gamora in GOTG and Pirates of the Caribbean iirc. She's such a good actress. Her Hot wings episode is enlightening. She's dubbed now the Queen of franchises. I'm psyched they're doing a 4th Star trek too. Sitting on my hands ready for Antman tomorrow, can't wait!

The plots have been fine and entertaining, but for the time of the first movie, and then the literal ground breaking work the ydid on the second movie, the appreciation for the visuals and cinematography/videography is what is most important for me with this franchise. It is incredibly stunning and amazing.

The 3D was phenomenal, and yeah like Oak said, when the tree fell, it really looked like ash was falling around you, the first time I actually went to try to wave them away automatically before I was like oh, its the movie lol and not real

2023-05-17 16:44:28 +0000 UTCVisually, I love the first Avatar. At the time and even to today some of the best CGI done in a film. The cast I like as well! Everybody does a good job in their role. I don't care for the story/plot, to me (and there's a good amount of people who also feel this way) that it is a very generic plot. There's a lot of people who even compare it to Pocahontas (which I do see similarities but I wouldn't say they're the same story but if you break them down far enough they're alike, but can't you do that for a lot of movies?). I do enjoy watching it but for me it is heavily carried by the visuals. I haven't seen the newest one yet so I don't have an opinion on it just yet! So when you guys do a reaction to that one I'll give it a shot!

2023-05-17 15:53:53 +0000 UTCyeah since the film is a little older I actually have it as a physical copy haha. But now I only realised that all the streaming services only have the normal versions. The second film has a version with bonus material which includes making of and more actual scenes but the bonus material is more than 3 hours long so the whole second film on prime is like 6.5 hours long. I think you want to go with the standard version for the second one as well since that alone is like 3 hours haha
