The typical range is between $300โ500, and an average story is about $400. (This is the budget Iโm inheriting at the moment, so Iโm hoping to find ways to boost these rates in the coming months.)
The stories weโre typically looking for are โmini-featuresโ around 800โ1500 words (1000 words as the ideal target), with about 2โ5 sources. Most of these stories wouldnโt be tied too strongly to the news cycle and have more of an evergreen life, so the turnaround from pitch to first draft is usually a couple weeks or so. But we do look for writers who are able to turn things around quickly when itโs needed, and I try my best to offer rates that are higher than normal when this is the situation.
