Building destruction VFX for supreme beginners

Back to the basics this time!

Here is the complete basic process for destroying anything on a real footage using Blender and RBD Lab.

Destroying buildings with vfx on a real footage especially is so much fun.

Lately I was feeling the necessity of having a basic tutorial like this...because most of the time in my videos i overdo just for the sake of the epicness of the final result…. SO, here is a potential first exercise for just the ABC of a destruction vfx shot!

Includes the entire process starting from the tracking to the final compositing.

Building destruction VFX for supreme beginners

Comments

Hello! Im SO happy to hear this, big times!! Regarding the project from view, if you respect all the following steps it will work always: - ensure to apply all modifiers - delete double vertices (merge by distance) - delete loose - apply scale and rotation - ensure to have a lot of geomtry in your mesh, if is low poly the texture will project with distortions - check faces orientation -choose a frame in which your building is as close as possible to the camera, offering also a good angle for the projection. -when you project, ensure to BE IN THE SAME EXACT FRAME of the texture file - the texture must have the same aspect ratio of the camera in your Blender file (1920 x 1080 or 4k usually, in general ensure that they are the same - before "project from view" select all faces (obvious, but just in case ) - FOR VERTICAL FOOTAGE ONLY: you also have to go in the popup menu that appears on bottom left, turn off "camera bounds" and turn on "correct aspect". Projecting an image sequence or using the UV project modifier are different things, and will not work for destruction. If you want to destroy an object, you must project a single texture.

Raffo! Your channel has helped me get my foot in the door at a small studio, a million thank you's! I was wondering if you had any more tips, or could possibly do a quick video on the whole "project from view" process. This tutorial worked perfectly for the castle texture, but I often have the material go haywire when I do it in other projects. I've tried using an image texture, an image sequence, and even the UV Project modifier, but I never get consistent results. It slips, warps, doesn't fracture right...there's got to be something I'm missing. Thank you again for everything!

This kind of animation is so great! We want even more! Thank you so much! PS: many people use Davinci Resolve, perhaps one day it would be interesting to give some tips for dealing with post-production. Thank you so much!
