New NJB: Amsterdam's Underwater Parking Garage

Hello everyone!

You may have heard about this already, because it was all over the urbanist interwebs over the past week: Amsterdam just opened an underwater parking garage for 7,000 bicycles at Amsterdam Centraal station.

And for once in my YouTube career, I was actually invited to film something, instead of trying to film it quickly before getting kicked out!

But this video isn't just about bike parking: it's also about some of the other great improvements that have happened in and around Amsterdam Centraal station over the past ~10 years.

Mark from Bicycle Dutch was also at the opening, and he's already released his video here, because he's faster at this YouTube stuff than I am. Check it out here:

Enjoy!

This is an example of Dutch engineering! A country below sea level has mastered waterproofing. It too bad the low lands in the US don’t pay attention.

I used the underwater stable a couple of times this week and it's very nice indeed, but I definitely agree about the annoying travelator announcements. CAUTION, YOU HAVE REACHED THE END OF MY COMMENT.

I booked my flight for April to see this IRL. Can’t wait!! Thanks for covering!

Yeah, I was feeling pretty good about our light rail system’s 15 minute frequencies. Then I saw this. And then, to add insult to injury, I saw on RMTransit last night that Houston’s light rail has 6 minutes frequencies. Houston! Now I think Sacramento is just sad. Well, I thought that before, but now it just hurts even more.

Even in cities that do have okay public transit, every six minutes is *quite* frequent. The subway lines here are supposed to arrive every six minutes during peak hours, but rarely do.

Luna

Btw, no hate here, keep up the good work! :)

Jeff Doll

Nice touch with the horse at the end. And, yes, I am jealous. When you add things like "I feel like 6 minutes is too infrequent," I feel like you're just rubbing it in, especially for those of us who live in cities too lame and pathetic to even bother adding a metro in the first ****ing place.

Amsterdam takes its cue for safety messages from Schiphol…Mind your step…Mind your step

Thanks for the awesome vid! As a sad American suburbanite, these places are truly incredible to see, I can't wait to visit someday!

You can spend a hour or more on exploring Amsterdam CS itself. Trains, Subway, Trams, Busses, Ferries, car tunnel, bike stables, lot of shops. The ferries are charge free!

I will be coming to Amsterdam for the Micro-Mobility conference in June! I will be arriving by train at Central Station. Thanks! 👍🏼

"Traveling through ugly places takes a toll on mental health" - totally agree. Car infra inherently ugly - well, certainly in most of NA & the world. Stroads & commercial sprawl along the endless rings around the old cores of towns and cities in the US are some of the worst - its often the development along the roads that is the ugliest. There can be tolerable car infra though, especially in rural areas without sprawl zoning & even better with good separated paths alongside. We cycled through a lot of this in the Netherlands last summer. Mostly though the roadway itself is the problem, the scenery is what provides the beauty. Here in the US its usually marred by billboards, strip malls, convenience stores, & worse. Humans deserve beauty.

Jealous!

Wow, great video! I'd heard about the underwater parking garage but didn't know much about it yet, I'm glad to see how much effort the city put into making it, and how much effort you have clearly put into this video!

This was wonderful. Keep up the great work! And now we can add "bicycle stables" to the unofficial NJB glossary.

Great video! I'm sure it's going to make many people jealous :) Also, nice to see the northern bicycle parking, which will probably be a really nice addition in the summer, as it should have a great view on the IJ. As for the construction works, they've already got plans up until 2030 (see also this ProRail video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL8nIq8NM44 ). I can appreciate the continuous improvements, there's always something new to see!
