Flash fiction

Jen stared into her black coffee like she was looking down a bottomless hole, refusing to look up and into Misha's eyes knowing that of she did do that she would feel like she'd slipped tumbling forward in a state of endless falling. They sat quetly say minutes until she finally spoke, "Tell me why you chose her over me." The voice came out hollow and distant.

"It's about the telling. You'd always tell me you loved me, while Lissa," Jen winced at hearing that name. "Has never echoed those words to me. Instead she showed that she loves me."

Jen squeezes the mug in both her hands wishing it would shatter. She'd been the one to ask for this meeting, for catharsis. She white knuckle lifted the mug to her mouth and took a drink feeling as hot as the coffee now felt cold after it's lack of attention. The thud it created when set back down shook the table. "You left me for someone who won't even tell you she loves you!" In her outrage she looked up. Now, her gaze got her lost in a fog covered maze as her heart twisted and rearranged itself in her chest.

"Lissa left little notes, gave brief touches, kid words, and bright smiles. She showed she loved me."

That knotted bit of tissue at her core snapped. Action, Jen's hands cupped the rim of the table and lifted as she stood up. The table flipped, ir had been bolted to the floor. Glassware went down as bits of wood and metal went up. The strength she held secret for many years, locked, padded, controlled,  now free at last. "Show! I'll show you! I'll show you all!" Jen bent her knees slightly and pushed off, soaring up, bursting through that shell of a ceiling, and away into the night sky. She'd fallen into her darkness and the world will never be the same.
