As has often occurred, this character design started out with some anatomy practice. The original sketch of a fit bald boy in a collar is included in this post. I liked the outcome, and started coloring it to prepare to post, and the more I tweaked the color, the more I wanted to try new details to color until I came up with this slightly ornate slave-boy-themed look.
Rough concept:
Jorai's initially a temple slave held captive by a sun-worshiping cult uses him in their ceremonies. He's liberated by a handsome hero, and later love interest, and joins the crusade to end his captors' grip on the land. After many heroic adventures, they succeed and freedom is restored.
The headdress in the variant is part of the cult's rain-making ritual. The cult superstitiously believes rain is the tears of the moon, who is subordinate in every way to the sun, and so they keep temple slaves to play what's considered a necessary but lowly role in their rituals. The cult also believes the rays of the sun are the Master's hair and the moon is bald and only reflects his light, hence Jorai's hairlessness.
