In the wake of Edge of the Radiance introducing us to Loung-We and its resident garrison, the intrepid One Page Rules scribes have been hard at work developing the full story of the Eternal Dynasty Faction. At present, the story of the Dynasty itself has been confined to a short introduction on Army Forge and a page on our website; a single Clan taking advantage of a long Civil War in order to rule over the others and expand outward through the stars and into the Sirius Sector, branding itself as the Eternal Dynasty.

Now, the story of these isolationist arrivals to the Sirius Sector will be told in full in our first Grimdark Future Faction Book. In this preview article, we’re going to share a small sample of the contents of the upcoming Eternal Dynasty Faction Book.

The Eternal Dynasty traces their origins to the oceanic world of Tyansing in the binary Kyusa Ri system. The Kusarians who inhabited this world, or Yangsa as they called themselves, organised into Clans among the myriad islands. Each Clan created its own culture, traditions, and way of life while viewing outsiders with distrust. Throughout their long history, the only thing that proved able to unite the various Clans and islands was the rule of a Dynast.

As they expanded out through their native sector, the name of their home system would become not only synonymous with their entire sector among the people of Sirius but also their species, leading to the popularity of the term Kusarian throughout the Sirius Sector.

However, the authority of the Dynast was gradually eroded as the Clans were no longer divided by oceans but by the vast expanse of space. This situation only deteriorated further with the discovery of Starjade, a precious mineral that allowed for far more advanced computing and artificial intelligence than had been considered possible among the Kusarians.

Soon, the ruling Dynasty was supplanted, and a civil war erupted among the Clans that endured over a century. For many, the Warring Clans period is the clearest example of the Kusarian expression “Xeng sang, wu hyi,” a long war with little gain.

Only through their cunning and the aid of their mysterious Oracle AI were the Hwan Clan able to finally rein in the long-warring Clans. Yet, Hwan Ying Lixin knew that open-handed diplomacy and kindness would not be sufficient to bring an end to the conflict. Instead, he relied on surveillance and manipulation to fuel the fires of war, manipulating Clans into increasingly violent conflict while quietly building his own power base under a thin veneer of neutrality.

When the time came, he revealed his hand and forced the Clans to acknowledge his granddaughter, Ying Muxin, as Dynast not only in name but as their absolute overlord. This, the Hwan Clan hoped, would establish a truly Eternal Dynasty that would not collapse to the internal rivalries of the Clans below their rule as so many had before.

Some Kusarians look to the Eternal Dynasty as saviours who put an end to a cycle of violence that consumed their people for generations. Others blame their manipulations for the worst scars of their long civil war. Yet, even the most resentful among them are reluctant to return to the open conflict of their grandparents while the wounds of the last remain unhealed.

Yet, ambitious bureaucrats and Captains still scheme in the shadows, as the balance of power between the Clans lies on a knife’s edge while the Dynasty strives to maintain order at all costs. But this is a story for another day.
