Every part of the book is twisted to be the most romantic/dramatic thing possible, which is how her father can simultaneously be a loving, caring man who saves Julia from her crazy mom, brings her to the park to catch fireflies and finances movies while also being an emotionally abusive dumpster diver who can’t afford a computer, packs his daughter’s lunches with trash tuna and carries on torrid love affairs behind his wife’s back.
