Gigs this week + Video Chat: Mitch Alexander
Added 2020-08-27 05:12:37 +0000 UTCIt’s been a while since I caught up with Mitch on Tea With Alice, and we had a chat about conspiracies, revolution and the number of pairs of shoes I have. It’s up at the top here and should be viewable even if you don’t have an instagram account (let me know if it isn’t.)
I’ll have him back this coming Monday at 8.30pm AEST, 11.30
Today is a bit brutal as I have The Bugle and A Rational Fear to write for and record back to back. I’d be intimidated but since edinburgh fringe would have been happening now - where every day is like that - I’m actually feeling invigorated and nostalgic! Also procrastinating by writing this (QED).
Tuesday night I did my first “proper” live gig back. Just the people in the room at this super weird magic cabaret venue. I didn’t realise I’d missed weird awful greenrooms.
This one had doves, a black cat, snakeskin stools and pictures of smug magicians. I’d put up pictures but then I’d end up having to lock this whole post down for you Patreonites because we aren’t meant to share the secrets of backstage on social media.
I imagine you’re not meant to think much about dove logistics when you’re watching magic. Are doves communal, or does each magician maintain his own dovecote. Or if you believe in magic are the doves drawn from a parallel dove-universe, or created in the instance and how do they feel about it, existentially. What are the metaphysical implications of a suddenly-created-dove? What imbalances does it cause in the universe?
I always find the first thing that comes to mind on the few occasions I’ve seen a magician produce a dove is ‘how often does he clean his dove-pocket and is it comfortable for the dove’.
Do some magicians never reveal their tricks because they involve animal cruelty? I guess that’s how you know whether it’s an evil magician or a good magician.

Maybe Prince had some secret dove knowledge?
