GOTF : SB) Chapter 1 Part 1

--AN) This is a Male Lead Story, but I hope you all can give it a try. It is a system/romance/harem novel. This is a slow release since it is being written for Amazon. Please Enjoy. ---

Life in the slums is not easy, especially for people like me, an orphan. It is because I know how hard it is to grow up here, surviving with nothing to your name, that I look out for the kids I took in. Each child has their own story. Each of us has our own secrets, but because we band together, we can look out for one another.

Passage 1:1 From The Book of the First Guardian…

“Let him go!” I yelled out as I kicked a boy around my age in the stomach before following up with a fist to the face of another boy, maybe a year or two younger than me. I might be taking care of a group of orphans, but that did not mean we were the only ones.

“Shit! It’s Alex! Everyone stop!” I heard someone yell. I am currently holding another boy by the scruff of his shirt, getting ready to punch him in the face. But since they were willing to stop, so would I.

“Rain, want to tell me why you are beating Nick again?” I asked even though I already knew the answer. Rain is the leader of one of the orphan groups of the slums. Rain and his group did most of the pickpocketing on the northern side of the market district. It is not something I would do, but everyone here is just trying to survive. This is why I would never report them to the guards. I am the guards already knew what they were doing as well but looked the other way unless they were caught red handed.

“What do you think? Alex, you need to keep your boy in check. It will not be as simple as a beating if we find him on our turf again.” Rain has said these words more than once. He has to act tough since he is the leader.

Rain got his name from his affinity with the water element and a skill he uses called [Lesser Rain], which allows him to create a small cloud of rain in front of him. It is nothing special in its basic form, but I heard that once it reaches a higher level, it could make massive storms and flood entire areas.

The world I live in is a world where everyone unlocked a system at the age of eight. Each one of us gained an elemental affinity. When we are first born, we would be born with brown hair and brown eyes. When our system is unlocked, our hair and eyes will change based on our affinity. Rain has blue hair and blue eyes, while I, who was aligned with the light element, have white hair and golden eyes.

Rain was not a bad guy it was just he was very protective of his turf. I can’t fault that since he was trying to take care of his group, and even a single loss of a purse was taking food from their mouths. But the problem was Nick, the orange-haired, orange-eyed boy lying on the ground covered in wounds and blood flowing from his nose, was part of my group.

“Rain, I told you before if Nick does something come to me before taking action!” I yelled back. I could not back down. I was the leader of my group, after all.

“That was what I was planning until he punched one of my guys. We were just going to detain him until we talked to you.” Rain’s answer made me sigh. Nick was prone to violence. He was someone who did not think. He was one of the first kids I took in, even if he was only a year younger than me.

“Alright, but this is going too far. If you kept beating him, he would have died. I might be able to heal, but if you beat him too much, even my healing won’t bring him back to life.” I conceded this much he should at least leave things alone for now. Or else it would be another brawl.

“Tch… We are done here. Let’s go!” Rain clicked his tongue and began walking away. I can never read him completely, but I feel he would not stoop so low as to kill someone unless he had no other choice.

Watching everyone leave, I walked over to Nick, who was still curled up on the ground. I sighed as I placed my hand on his body. “Minor Heal…”

“Argh… Why did you just let those bastard leave!?” Nick once more complained about how I handled things. He did not seem to understand that the situation he was just in was brought on by his own actions.

“When will you stop pickpocketing? We have no need to commit petty crimes. As long as we work hard killing Dumdum Rats.” Dumdum Rats were called such since they were very stupid. They would stand there while you killed them. They were the weakest of the weakest monsters. But they still dropped a fingernail-sized mana stone. These stones could be sold at the guild for three copper. Gather enough and we could eat an entire day while also learning how to fight. It was not easy, but it would at least allow us to live proper lives without resorting to petty theft like the other orphans.

While my thoughts were one thing, Nick also had his own thoughts on the matter. “Dumdum rats? What good does that do us? We barely make it by! One pouch is enough to feed us for a week!”
