City Hall Sketches and Postcards to Voters

I've been trying to show up where I can. It's hard to know where to put time and energy, given how many things need attention. A couple weeks ago, I saw a flyer asking people to show up to a City Council meeting to "stop Zenith" (aka show support for a City Council resolution to ask the mayor and the auditor to investigate Zenith Energy).

The meeting lasted over 4 hours, so I had a bunch of time to draw.

Some protestors out front were banging a drum and chanting about Palestine for half an hour or so.

This conversation didn't happen in person; it's more the echoes of a zillion ones I've read online. I didn't plan to have the conversation end on a yelling face with no costume--I just ran out of space--but I like how that face works for both characters' dialogue.

Around 10:30pm, the resolution passed. People cheered, and I was momentarily enthusiastic about the process of motions, discussions, votes, compromises, and more motions.

Another thing I've started doing regularly is sending get-out-the-vote postcards. You can sign up with Postcards To Voters to send postcards about a special election or close race. Then they email you some anonymous addresses, some official messaging, and some talking points that you can mix and match. You can sign up for as few as 4 addresses if you don't have a lot of time.

For me, drawing 6-10 postcards is a fun way to play with slightly different layouts to see what I like best. Naomi started looking up the recipients' state bird or state flower to draw on her postcards. Adding some local flavor to the postcards has made it a lot more fun.

For example, Pensacola, Florida has a beach ball-shaped water tower...

Wisconsin's state animal is the badger...

and everyone in Atlanta knows "the big chicken."

You can see the big chicken from the highway, so it's often used as a landmark when giving directions. Also, the eyes and beak move! It's currently a KFC (and the latest remodel makes it look like an industrial Shake Shack). I drew an earlier version of the building, cream-colored with red and white trim, before I looked it up on Google street view. That's why one of these drawings is more charming than the others.

Thanks as always for supporting me on Patreon! I hope you're finding ways to connect with people and feel like you can make a difference.

Hee re: "I would watch a prestige drama about whatever these 3 do at City Hall." I'd watch it with you. :-)
