I'm hyper critical of my films. I rarely like them. I think only of what I wanted to do, and where I fell short. Typical of artists - half my actors refuse to watch the finished films because they can't watch themselves perform. Well, 'The Wall' (season 8) was a movie I had high ambitions for and, in my mind, fell horribly short. All I could see was how it diverged from my original vision.
The lead actress Alex, who has trouble watching herself, saw and absolutely loved the film. She thinks it's our best collaboration. I disagreed. And I never watched it again. But recently when I uploaded the trailer I noticed how well the trailer came out. And I decided to go back and watch 'The Wall'.
And I liked it!
It didn't follow my original plan, however it's actually a very good film. I feel (now), one of my better films.
Now, am I a changed person who will view all my films as works of art? No. But being hyper critical has its benefits, in that it forces me to always do better, and to not settle for "good enough".
