July '23 Update

Hi guys,

First things first. I am pleased to say that I now have a promo video up on YouTube.

It's taken me far longer than it should have to get around to making this, but talking to you guys on the last livestream I realised that I am very short on routes to discovery. I spent a couple of days brewing up this 80-second video, but hopefully it's what I need to give my publicity a bit of a boost.

Take a look. I'm curious to hear what you think of it! If you want to do me a favour, give me a like and help boost the video up the search results.

SSR1 is going great. The new belt drive with the 60mm pulley means that SSR1 is now faster than the best competition, which is The Handy, whilst also with a longer stroke. It's also quieter than The Handy, thanks to the new MT6701 encoder.

I know that I said I was going to move on to something else this month, but I think that I really need to prioritise getting WiFi support built into this device, so that is my goal for this month. Those of you on my Maker ($8) tier should be seeing that little upgrade soon.

My Benefactor ($16) tier newsletter for June is in the works. There's some interesting stuff on capacitive sensing, which will particularly interest the tinkerers amongst you. Honestly I didn't realise how easy it was to implement!

For my Supporter ($2) tier this month I will be livestreaming on Wednesday 26th June at 11pm BST (5pm EDT). I'll likely be looking at the WiFi stuff, but it depends what I get up to.

Honestly given how hard I've been pushing myself with stuff this year I want to start undercommitting again so that I can start to play with stuff a bit more, like I used to. At the very least it makes for more interesting show-and-tell sessions I think!

All the best!

Hey, have you heard of Igus Drylin bearings? these might do the trick for you... https://a.co/d/2YQnPbr

Is this the july update or will there be a release?

Just gonna jump in and say take your time and you do you. Some of your posts sound you've been stressed and that feels like the opposite of what this is about. Love that you're building this, super fun, thanks for sharing with us, and I really hope you continue to enjoy just tinkering with this thing.

Will there be a final implementation of the hall sensor coming as well? Not only where/how to mount it but also in the software.

Hi. Have you ever seen dryer drum teflon bearing slides? They put four equidistant around the circumference of the dryer drum to keep it sliding friction free as it spins around. They're just thin rectangles of teflon, very slippery, lasts for years. Anyway, gave me the idea to get this, https://a.co/d/2YQnPbr I'm going to enlarge the holes in the traveler to accommodate this PTFE tubing for use as a slippery grease-free super-silent bearing. I'll let you know how it works out. I just ordered most parts from Shenzhen the other day so its still a ways out. Thanks for all the hard work, you have my respect.

Have you ever considered using something like extruded aluminum for the main structure? It should be quite a bit stronger and more rigid, along with being very easy to work with.
