Q&A - #3

Alright patrons, some of you already heard from the Webley Fosbery episode update that we will be having our 3rd Q&A in 2 weeks!  Please submit your question here, 1 question per patron, and have your question in by Tuesday, February 23rd, that way we'll have time get them all sorted and answered.  The last Q&A was just over 3 hours, we had a lot of laughs, lost our minds a little, so please ask away and we will do our best to answer to the best of our ability!

Comments

I also want to see your work on the math 😆

Austin Minder

Ian did the 1911 development 6 years ago in 31min, what x speed on the video will it take to make your summary 31 minutes long ex. 2x, 4x, 8x, or 16x

Austin Minder

Absolutely enjoy listening to the C&Rsenal Mp3's offered while out in the "shop" preparing brass and loading ammo for the next trip to the range. Love you's guys and the good work!!!

Mustafa's Fleas

Make sure y'all don't work too hard alright? But I do think we are all looking forward to the hours of entertainment!

Gage

Do you like trains?

Henry Case

Mae Responding: Thank you everyone for your questions! We're now past the cut off time. We'll get all these questions sorted, video should be up Tuesday. Last Q&A was 3 hours, let's see how this one shakes out!

C&Rsenal

How do you clean and maintain your guns, especially the ones on the wall? Do you have a long term schedule for cleaning and reoiling?

Kanchou Mike

What would war1 firearm had the greatest impact.

Joel Getschman

What is your cruise favourite weapon ?

Joel Getschman

Seeing a lot of attention paid to the FG-42, not only from the reproductions but in general, I can't help but wonder why no one picked up production of them after WWII? The West Germans in particular had no qualms about continued use and new production of the P-38 and the MG 42.

Harry Dozier

Since I have been trying to get better sources for my own research, where are some decent places to find reference books that don't cost $200... or am I just stuck paying that if I don't want to copy your homework? There are times I buy cheaper books but they are filled with Fuddlore or they fall in love with their subject.

Milsurp Mike

I'm glad that someone else remembers this old post. After failing to find it in order to refresh my memory I began to wonder if my imagination was getting the better of me, haha.

Timothy Conklin

Since en bloc is the French name. What did Mannlicher call it?

Derrick Smith

is cereal a soup?

Gabriel Tatz

I’ve lived in Charleston for 4 years while in school... And since y’all live in Charleston, a great phenomenal place for all different types of food, what is your favorite local restaurant? Whether it be a local chain or a one off restaurant. Huge fan of Kickin Chicken or Hometeam BBQ myself.

Michael Holmes

With you doing older cap and ball revolvers in your new series any plans on doing any episodes on muskets( reproduction's or original) or black powder cartridge guns?

Timothy Billow

After listening to C&Rensal and Forgotten Weapons about historians, how do "Professional" historians treat you?

James Wood

Of all the guns featured in the show, which, if any, would ya'll like to see available as reproductions/be currently produced?

Coatl

Alvin York and Frank Luke are Americans that famously used their pistols in combat. Are there equivalent soldiers from other countries?

Willard Fleetwood

To address your original question, no it's not feasible to produce in today's economy. The machining on the slide alone would price it out of current markets, not to mention the costs to redesign the safety and mag release, as well as the tooling design and setup because it hasn't been around since the 20's. At best you'd end up with some kind of travesty like Remington's re-imagining of the model 51. Even a straight reproduction would be questionable; e.g. reintroducing a model of the colt 1903 pocket hammerless gave colt fans an overpriced, parkerized, piece of nostalgia and caused chaos in the collector marker, most notably artificially driving up prices on old pistols. I do own a 1907 and love it, it's fun to shoot and a great conversation piece. I think the possibilities of where handgun design might gone if military sales were better is intriguing . And it's fun to point out to the wonder-nine crowd that a military, striker-fired, doublestack magazine, pistol with no screws that could be stripped without tools was in service in 1915.

Mr. Lee

Who actually thought the barleycorn sight was a good idea? Does it have any advantages over notch-and-post style of tangent sights?

Steven Faiello

Question for Mae, did Kevin ever shut up? Thanks to Othias, Mae and all involved in C&Rsenal, you have reinvigorated my interest in and understanding of Great War has improved radically and your have been an antidote to COVID-19 and divorce proceedings. Thanks for all you do.

John Casey

What are you opinions on milsurp stock maintenance? What, if anything, do you do with your stocks? Am I supposed to be applying BLO or something?

Tenacious Trilobite

Certainly. She was a magazine fed semi-auto pistol. Given the massive pistol shortage in WWI, I would imagine she would have been considered very useful. I mean would a British Webley Fosbery really be that much more suitable for pilots over a C-93?

Royeaux

How has the Pandemic affected your choice of weapons for the episodes?

Keith B

Ever since the Carcano rifle has gone onto the surplus market people all around the world have criticized its simplicity, low cost and quality. In the 21st century the Carcano to me resembles the modern bolt action high value rifles today like the Ruger American and Savage Axis for instance which many hunters and sportsman love. Do you find it funny and odd that the most hated military rifle from the 20th century is now leading the way in bolt design for modern high value bolt action rifles? Why has the Mauser action fallen out of favor? Keep up the good work love your show!

Kieran

How did you both get into making these awesome firearms video? I love the history and the demo mix of your style. Thank you

Mark Snow

Last Q&A, someone asked if they were married or cousins. IIRC the answer was that it's legal for both in SC.

Minion

Easy. First and foremost, do what Greece, Romania, and Serbia did and declare war on your main arm supplier. Rifle and carbine? Ross Mk II no stars in.280 Ross. Auto pistol? Glisenti 1910, but you buy your 9x19 ammo from Germany, because it’s the same, right? LMG? Madsen. Not because they’re bad, but because you’ll never get any. And while we’re not getting shit, buy your machine guns from Colt. It doesn’t matter which one. None of it really matters though, because by the end of 1916 you’re going to be getting Berthiers (if you’re an Entente ally) or ragged out Gew 88’s or captured Mosins (if you’re a Central Powers ally).

Christopher Dooley

Why was the Mosin’s bolt handle so short compared to other rifles of the time?

Christopher Dooley

What's your favorite part about making the Primer show and/or running C&Rsenal as a whole?

William Jensen

If Australia was to do a Canada and adopt a rifle in 303, that wasn't the Lee Enfield, assuming domestic production at Lithgow (Just a heads up that rhymes with snow), what would have been the best to adopt? Just a Mauser derived action or something different?

Awnman

You've got the name of the Kingdom correct, but the guns have to be pre 1918: so no MP18 or RSC1918, and possibly not the 1917 either if that didn't make in into service by the end of 1917?

Gavin Rea-Davies

Uh, Colt can't turn anything around; they're not in charge anymore. Can CZ? I don't think it matters: having a U.S. base of operations means CZ can now offer anything in their product line for either .mil or civilians just by transferring production here, regardless of what import bans our newly installed Marxist in Chief may impose. Bottom line, CZ just keeps going from success to success by taking the long view & by being meticulous & methodical.

Bruce Brodnax

Pretty sure it's the Wall gun from way back...

Bruce Brodnax

Submachine guns are sidearms? I think the OP is looking for Othais' take on the best pistol of WW1 after the Colt 1911 or Luger...

Bruce Brodnax

To clarify: what weapons from 1918 would King Othais of Kneetoyourgroinia outfit his forces with to repulse Elbonia's forces armed with Ian's craptastic mish-mash of the worst leftovers from WW2?

Bruce Brodnax

Your argument fails on merit: tortillas != bread.

Bruce Brodnax

Just an FYI: there's no "W" in Elbonia. Don't blame me; if you don't like it, you can take it up w/ Scott Adams...

Bruce Brodnax

Neither, since .308Win hasn't been invented yet. A Savage 99 in .250 Savage, otoh, was available and so was the ammo [if only commercially] and would have been the closest thing to an assault rifle at the time...

Bruce Brodnax

As Othais (& other history channels) have repeatedly stated, due to the DMCA [aka, "The Disney Forever Act"] use of anything post-1925 comes with a host of legal headaches they're just not going to get into...

Bruce Brodnax

Norwegian Krag. The 6.5 Swede [I guess technically, "6.5 Union"] cartridge is superb, and the Norwegian Krag carbine is best of breed, I think...

Bruce Brodnax

Have you *seen* a Borchardt?.. 😉

Bruce Brodnax

Nobody messed w/ their sights during battle. Hence "battle sight" [and the ridiculously long-range 400yd zeros, etc.]; windage was used to zero the rifle for the shooter, and of course, could be muddled with during match shooting, but during battle it was all Kentucky windage...

Bruce Brodnax

^^ This! We would have found out about this if the side project with their reloading expert had ever gotten off the ground before YT changed their policy about everything firearms...

Bruce Brodnax

I upvoted this because I'm curious too, but I completely understand if Othais refuses to answer and pleads the 5th in an effort to take the high road or avoid legal repercussions from a far larger & more profitable enterprise who can just lawyer C&Rsenal to death...

Bruce Brodnax

Yes, but it has to have the salty adjunct [sausage, ham, salami (never pepperoni, bah!)] along with it. Everyone knows that...

Bruce Brodnax

Follow-on Q: if there was a BP alternative that cost ~ the same and smoked & fouled less, but was just as corrosive, would you use it or would you prefer the smell & smoke of "the holy black?"

Bruce Brodnax

I betting "ammo." They've got the drill down by now for working on the set, but the co$t of the sometimes esoteric ammo has to be eating them alive on occasion. I think Othais would probably enjoy the fiscal relief more than elbow room...

Bruce Brodnax

Closest would be the 6.5x50 Arisaka...

Bruce Brodnax

Hearts. Me like it simple...

Bruce Brodnax

Favorite so bad that it's good movie that's not The Room?

Matt

What was your life like before C&Rsenal? Are there hobbies and activities from your Before C&R Life that no longer do and miss doing?

Brian Foster

Describe your ideal breakfast, and why it includes grits, and if not explain yourselves as southerners.

Sleepy's good boy

What do you do if you can't find a proper book for researching a particular firearm? I.e. it's in a foreign language. You had stated to a similar question before that a Google search usually helps. However could you be more specific (perhaps an example) for those as tech savvy as a rock such as myself.

Philip Spadano

You have said this before, it's always I had my pistol, or my shovel, Tom in the back had a 32 automatic. We saw that wall crumpled and the light come through. Tom shot however many rounds through the hole, I cocked back my revolver and let a few rounds off. Jimmothy threw a bomb into the hole and that was that. No one knows what they had it's just stuff happened and my gun went bang.

Jonathan Sullivan

It hasn't mutated into an STD as far as I know... Let the boys feel the crisp winter air.

Jonathan Sullivan

They are from the south so it's not completely off the table.... 🤷🏻‍♂️ Jk

Jonathan Sullivan

Obviously the Germans.... Feldgrau with the pickelhaube! Tactical on the bottom, stylish on top

Jonathan Sullivan

How many Krags could a gun smith Krag if a gun smith could smith Krags?

Jonathan Sullivan

I like that one, everyone always talks about Machinegun vs intermediate... Was there ever a happy medium?

Jonathan Sullivan

Ok this is sort of niche... I know during the great war there were mining parties on each side... Digging towards each others lines. I listen to librivox and listen to alot of old accounts from WW1 in the public domain. I've heard of groups tunneling towards each others lines and stopping where they heard each others picks or shovels. What sort of weapons would the parties carry into the tunnels, have you found any reliable information about equipping sappers to fight enemy sappers?

Jonathan Sullivan

Would you consider doing episodes on obscure commercial guns. Iver Johnson top breaks, Marlin 88?, Pump action Rifles?

Eric Reno

I think they've covered that in their Unloaded podcasts. Short answer is I think they had planned to travel up to a museum to cover it just as the Covid lockdowns hit. Now it's postponed until the lockdowns and travel restrictions get lifted enough that they can reliably plan the trip again.

William Christensdn

What is your take on the recent movie 1917? Accuracy of arms, people/uniforms and location/set?

brian armstrong

In the Reprocussion Series, what's your opinion on using Indian made muskets/pistols? And have you considered using them?

Gerald Drake

Question: Will we get a Naval Luger episode before the close of WWI? I know it’s an old video, but there was a reference to covering them in the future. Thank! Keep up the great work!

Jon Bachmann

If you ever finish the WW1 series, what topic would you want to cover next? I think a few videos on Saturday night specials would be fascinating.

Bunnysmasher

How many more firearms from WWI can we expect? Are you almost at the end? If so, do you plan to do a WWII series?

Dr. B

I have been kicking an idea around the back of my head, have you considered taking sponsors from your patreon in the form of you acting as a 3rd party to buy guns at auction for patrons, and you shoot your video between buying and shipping to an FFL? I'm not sure of the legalities of auctions or ATF.

Adam

I think he has said before in one of their podcast where he was actively bidding for an item while recording, that he wouldn't reveal his strategy due to the competitive nature of buying from an auction. But who knows maybe he has some advice he will give. 🤷‍♂️. I know he has mentioned being burned several times in the past by over sharing with bad faith assholes.

Adam

Mae, why the quarter tuck of the shirt at the range?

Loren Hermanson

The whole point is to keep the original look and function. Not to copy every other generic design. It's unique simple and for a modern day shooter I think the change of safety and mag release is all it needs.

Adam Junemann

What gun that you have covered most fits "my brain says no, but my heart says YES!"?

Jordan Wagner

Aside from Browning or Colt, which firearms designer could use a Tiger King style Netflix limited series?

K. D. Campbell

The what?

K. D. Campbell

Can we get a series on the guns of George Kellgren and Keltec similar to what you guys are doing with Reprocussion and Samuel Colt? (Adding that this is a genuine question, not trolling).

FortunateCrumb

take away the art deco, add double action, and step up to 9mm: beretta px4 compact

Mr. Lee

when are we going to get "determined idiot" patches?

Mr. Lee

Any tips or tricks for bidding strategies on Gunbroker?

PHILLIP DOUBLE U

Q: What are your thoughts on the sights and specifically the distances they are marked for on the WWI era rifles? It seems they were rather optimistic for what some of the cartridges were capable of.

Brian K

When will the 1911 receive its Primer episode?

Kevin Shelton

Why were the French and British so resistant to adopting a standard semi-automatic pistol and kept with their revolvers? I know that both purchases some semi-autos (especially the Ruby by France) but this seems to be more out of desperation for war material rather than preference. Was it because both thought revolvers more reliable, the inability to tool up production of a new gun, not wanting to change ammunition (looking at your .455 Webley), or something else? Also a follow up, Gamecocks or Tigers????

Ed Stewart

In keeping with the broader military history themed youtube trend, it is July 1914, and the fledgling republic of Elbonia has decided that it needs to embark on a crash modernization of its military forces as a result of the rapidly escalating great power tensions. In lieu of a normal trials process, they have turned to the two of you for advice on their small-arms procurement. However, you are secretly traitors who want to sabotage the country for your own gain. The Elbonian ministry of defense has asked you to select a magazine rifle and carbine, an automatic pistol or double-action revolver, and a machine gun (all firing some sort of relatively modern, smokeless cartridge). What would you choose in order to make the Elbonian army as ineffective as possible?

robo-jones

Have you seen any training materials on the Steyr-Hahn, either from the manufacturer or the Austro-Hungarian army, that indicate how it was meant to be carried? It's interesting that the safety can only be engaged when the hammer is cocked by pulling the slide back a little bit but engages easily with the hammer down, which actually rotates the hammer slightly out of contact with the firing pin, and cocking the hammer automatically disengages the safety. All this suggests that perhaps it was meant to be carried hammer down on a live round after manually decocking, which was probably less scary to people in 1912 than in it now? In any case thanks for the countless hours of quality, informative content.

Jon Allen

Any plans to expand the reproduction series to cartridge firing guns?

Zap Rowsdower

In ww1 when you captured enemy machine guns u used it. What happened to that gun after the that combat was over? Did it stayed in capturing unit or did they sent it to somewhere?

eRahja

For the time period between 1920 to 1930, is there a military firearm or series of military firearms you are looking forward to doing research and videos on?

Sam Alger

It is 1919. You are head of arms procurement for your nations forces and after witnessing, but not involved in, the now ended Great War tasked with upgrading your military’s small arms. Let’s say it’s an inland county with size and terrain similarities to the state of Montana. What rifle, handgun, light machine gun, and heavy machine guns that were available at that time would you choose to issue to your troops? You are also able to select whatever caliber you desire for the arms you choose. For example you can choose a M1917 in 7.62x54R. Go.

Luke Telling

Your in charge of us involvement in ww1 what guns and planning would you create before involvement in the war?

Austin Minder

Q: can you post a video with a compilation of your "War Were Declared" montages, with links to their sources? Or maybe just a "Minute of Mae" style version on each montage? If you don't have the original sourcelinks, maybe a more casual vod caste, maybe you and Ian or some others giving your best guess analysis on location etc based on uniforms, weapons being used, etc. Something simple and casual like Minute of Mae or the handtrap series. More content for minimal effort.

William Christensdn

When is the next patch/t-shirt drop planned? I always look forward to buying the merch

Jason Childers

SOOO...OLD broken pump shotguns? I do have this Stevens 520 double humpback (one hump design wasn't enough for John B.) that needs HELP? ; )

Dr Don Hurley

The guinea pig(s) get occasional screen time and cards, but the dogs do not. Why no screen time for or promotional material with the dogos? Couldn't one of them fetch the Riechsrevolver ejector stick or something...

Andrey Gardner

I know that most infantrymen liked to have a handgun as a backup, but that handguns were typically not issued to enlisted men. I know that officers were often responsible for providing their own sidearm. I was wondering though if an enlisted infantrymen was able to purchase and carry his own sidearm, or if there were regulations against this during WW1? I imagine he would have been responsible for his own ammo as well if it was not a round in the supply chain. I imagine with the often close quarter nature of trench warfare that handguns would have been in high demand among enlisted men.

Ian T Phillips

You didn't specify when in WWI so I'll take an MP 18 please.

GWTpict

Depends on what you may, or may not, be wearing under it.

GWTpict

Through the magic of time travel, you can prevent 2015 Othias from making one mistake with regards to the show. What do you tell him?

Robert

Any project to travel to Europe ? (with or without Crozier?)

Bertrand Ludovic

When will we see more Crozier? And what are his opinions on the top ten berries of WW1?

Jeremy Rintoul

I noticed the sides of May's hair have a much lighter color than the rest. Poor lighting on the set or is Othias that difficult to work and live with? *sncr*

Markus B.

Mae's Top 10 rifles of WWI was quite the fun video, is there a Top 10 pistols version in the works?

John Boy

Take a look at this: https://collections.royalarmouries.org/first-world-war/type/rac-narrative-154.html Definitely some reserve use for the 303-version, similar to the use of the Gras and Remington Rolling Blocks by the French, or the Gewehr 71 by the Germans

John Boy

Just bought a Savage 1907 a couple months ago and I think it's a very elegant pistol. My question is if you were to move the safety and make it ambidextrous as well as change the magazine release to a push button do you think it would be a pistol that would work in today's economy?

Adam Junemann

What was your most unfortunate haircut? And do you have pictures? Ian answered this question in one of his Q&As.

Tiger in man's clothing

Once the new range is up and running have you thought about a run and gun setup under a standardized course of fire to have a somewhat effective means of comparing firearms in a more practical environment

Dayton Robbins

This is an interesting question because: As a WWI soldier, would you trust any future weapons that are too different from what you are familiar with? Rifles might seem to crazy, where a high capacity 9mm, say a Glock 17 with 32 round mags, wouldn't be that much different from pistols that already exist. And in a trench raiding situation the pistol might be better tactically. What if the weapon you choose is a Lance Intermediate Missile that you use to nuke Berlin and wipe out all the German leadership. Is killing the 500,000 residents in the blast radius to spare the 2 million soldiers in the trenches?

Tiger in man's clothing

Will you create a new poster for semi-auto handguns or machine guns of WW1 to match the other WW1 posters?

C W

Which firearm(s) have you guys come across that has a disastrous development story that would be the fitting subject of a collaborative episode with “Well There’s Your Problem” podcast?

Evan Williams

If ya’ll (othais, mae, suzie, and bruno) could pick the most interesting vehicle ( yes i do mean vehicle, plane, train, auto, boat, tank, space craft, ect) you would like to own pre 1979, what would it be? 1 answer per person.

Maz

Totally agree, I had a chance to spend about half a day there in 2015 and was blown away by the collection and displays they had. Seeing Franz Ferdinand's car and bloody uniform was definitely a unique experience, as well as the 1910's used in the plot.

Sabertooth88

.577/450 and 577 snider and a few others are available on the British Militaria Forum. Lots of knowledge there, might even find a few for the other cartridges asked about. Alot of us on there shoot Martin-Henry, Sniders, Besses, P53's and about anything else that goes boom

Timothy Billow

The Martini-Henry for Queen and Empire: The British Military Martini-Henry, Martini-Metford and Martini-Enfield Rifles and Carbines; the Definitive History of Their Development and Service, 1869-1904 Neil Aspinshaw. IMA sells it and i believe they helped publish it, but Neil Aspinshaw is the author and did a fantastic job. Book is availabe through IMA in US or you can order one direct from Neil.

Timothy Billow

Forget the guns, let's do the important stuff. Lasagna or shepherd's pie?

Greg Stachowski

He likes big bores and cannot lie.

Greg Stachowski

If you were a infantry soldier in WW1, and through some "magic" you could have access to modern firearms, which gun would you take with you into the trenches?

Heini Sauerkraut

Can only US citizens lend you guns, what i mean by that is did somebody outside of US offered you to lend their guns you needed but becasue they were from abroad you couldn't accept?

Michk

What’s your 2021 EDC?

Andrew O’Brien

Yeah, but with guns from before 1918

Gavin Rea-Davies

Between the Trapdoor Springfield, Sharps, and Rolling Block, which would you take in 45-70?

Gannon Woods

What are your holy grail guns?

Jack - Cartridge_Gram

What is your favorite cold beverage?

TJ

For the Primer serie, do you plan to move right into WWII or to cover some of the early stuff that was no longer in use at the start of WWI (needlefire, Shneider/tabatiere, Albini, ecc...)?

Matteo Manino

Long term plan? capNball revolvers (hopefully continues a bit more) and shotguns and towards then towards wwII? or taking your time to prepare and sandwich more in between?

Guido Schriewer

Is this question what would they take to go up against an Ian armed Elbonia?

Primarch359

If a hotdog is a sandwich then tacos must also be a sandwiches

Primarch359

I really liked the Heeresgeschichtliches museum in Vienna. They actually have an extensive ww1 section that was put together before the 2014 anniversary.

Primarch359

I mean covid is just an excuse to evaluate musketry while in period gas masks.

Primarch359

Othais seems to really love shotguns. Not saying that's a bad thing, but why does he love shotguns so?

TestBacon

Can you share any frightful experiences with surplus ammo malfunctions you have experienced? Hang-fires, bullets stuck in bore, ruptured cartridge cases or popped primers etc?

Jon B

What are your thoughts about the recent massive importation of Carcanos? I’ve seen them now being imported from Argentina, Ethiopia, as well as Italy. Do you think it’s a good thing or a bad thing that they are selling so cheap?

Zachary Perkey

Excluding the 1917 revolvers, how common was the use of speed loaders for revolvers during the war and how many would one typically have?

Jack Andersen

Is there any chance that when you go to Springfield to cover the evolution of the 1911 you will take a look at the stamped sheet metal 1911 there seems to be very little available on it.

Aulani Counsman

How many more WWI firearms are there before you're done with the WWI primer series? Taking into account that there are some you might just never be able to get for the hands on stuff. Love your show

Kimzter

In your research on your upcoming shotgun series. How much/often were the use of shotguns for not just bird hunting and clay shooting but hunting larger four legged animals with larger shot sizes (predators=wolf/coyote/fox/etc game=wild-pigs/deer-drive/etc) refrenced in advertising, magazine articles, and the lore of the time when repeating center-fire shotguns were in their very early years?

Is there a good source for reloading data and information for obscure black powder and transitional cartridges such as 11mm Mauser, 8x50R Mannlicher, 8x56R Mannlicher, 7.5x53.5 Swiss, 8x60 Kropatchek, and .577/450 Martini Henry? There does not to be much published data for these types of cartridges and online forums can be contradictory or misleading.

CHASE CIMBUREK

Have yall ever shot a Martini-Henry or similar firearm and do you know if it serviced in WW1?

Jt Hancock

Any thoughts on CZ’s acquisition of Colt? Do you think Colt can finally turn it around now?

Aaron Hunt

What's the biggest/heaviest gun that you've each fired, and what's the biggest that you think you can handle?

Walt Findley

What do y'all reckon is the best stocked pistol of the war?

Joseph Corsei

What was your favorite episode to do? Including research, acquisition (if needed), shooting, filming, etc. What about your least favorite?

David Bock

If I remember correctly , Belgian use of the Lewis Gun was incredibly effective, in part due to their more guerilla style light machine guns tactics. Are there any guns you've tested which would be better suited to a different use than they were given? Are any of Mae's less favored guns redeemed with a change in usage?

Halinspark

So we know that Othias's just-for-fun gun/spite moped is the ever awesome Kel-Tec sub2000, but what is Mae's just-for-fun gun? Also, do you think you'll ever do a "Mae's top 10" list for carbines or pistols?

Sean Cottle

I always look forward to your newest episodes. My question to you would be if you were defending a trench in WW1 and 3 enemies soliders with trench clubs and knives came over the side. Excluding the 1911 and Luger what period side arm would you want to have to defend yourself?

Tim Brintnall

Not finding anything on the IMA book, you have more info or other keywords I can search?

Kevin Halgren

You have recently learned how Elbonia has decided to arm it's forces (Ian's Q&A number 40, time 54:23). You have found a stash of every type of gun from around the world, that was sealed away at Christmas 1917. You are planning to invade. What arms will you take?

Gavin Rea-Davies

Please rate the 6.5mm cartridges first in shoulder arms and then for machine guns. 6.5x55mm Swedish/Norwegian optional.

Will Sanders

Starting a Guntuber civil war?

Will Sanders

What are your favorite books you've come across while researching?

Brad & Emily Mitchell

Is a hotdog a sandwich?

38super_partizan

Try the recent Martini Henry book from IMA, and the old but epic The Gun and It's development by Greener.

Gavin Rea-Davies

In your judgement what is the best gun show in the Carolinas for milsurps and the best food in that area?

Wayne Dygert

So, you've been tasked with organising the 1st Elbownian Dino Regiment. What sort of dinosaur would you choose, and with what weapons would you equip the 'riders'?

Minion

So what’s the direction of the show after the WW1 stuff. I like the colt cap and ball direction, maybe Guns of the old West?

Chris Marchi

One of the things I enjoy about the show is that the only politics or bias that I get out of the show is "I like boom sticks and their accessories". Is It difficult to keep the show factual and mostly apolitical with internet culture as it currently exists?

Bryant Nykiel

I'm aware of two books and one extended journal article that went into detail on the process of manufacturing of specific firearms, United States Rifles and Machine Guns by Fred H. Colvin (1917) which details all the manufacturing specs and processes for the Model 1903 Springfield and Aus der Fertigung des Infanterie-Gewehrs Modell Mauser 98 by Karl Trotter (1937) which details the manufacturing process of the Mauser Gewehr 98. The Journal "Machinery" in the May 1916 article "The Military Rifle - 2" (pg. 780) by Douglas T. Hamilton does so for the Spanish Mauser as well. Are you aware of any similar books or other documents on any other classic firearms, in English or otherwise that go into that sort of detail?

Kevin Halgren

Why does the Luger (and a few other handguns) have a trigger that is almost a complete circle? Does that extra part above and ahead of where your finger hits it serve any purpose?

Andy Wander

How many weapons in the great war had an impact their counterparts didn't? That is to say, were there any rifles, pistols, mortars, howitzers, etc, that were so much better than other rifles, pistols, etc, that they actually were noted to change the outcome of an engagement?

Hunter Olsen

What is your favourite type of comment, those ones that just make you smile. 🙂 keep up the fantastic work.

Spicy110

Any gun you’re looking forward to covering most once you’re finished with WW1?

Christian Hanes

Which neutral country had the best main line rifle of WW1/2.

Ryan Cernekee

Listen to this man! Never mind "I've got to do a video every fortnight; and a Minute of Mae; and a scan; and loads of other stuff to tickle the jaded fancy of people who probably hate me!" Scan a page advertising Alabama's Pig Butt Hole Big Gun Store's offer of shotgun grade chicken fat at less than a $ a gallon. Do a 10 minute patrons podcast.

Bradwan

When you finish all the weapons you can conceivably get your hands on for research and showing, will you finally take a month off to come out into the world and not do vampire hours(i.e. being awake only when the sun is down)? #freeOthias

Doug G

After having done the show for as long as you have, what do you look forward to most and what do you miss about the beginning

zach wenig

Why were there so many bizarre scope mounting systems before the world settled on mounts wherein "the bottom screws on to the receiver, the top wraps around the scope"? I feel like the answer revolves around stripper clips, which makes even less sense to me for a rifle like the SMLE.

Adam Schindler

If the Second Boer War had not happened what would do you think the British Army's rifle would have been in 1914? Would the SMLE have happened? Would the British Army have been better equipped and trained for the war that they never planned for?

Bradwan

I think I asked Ian, or C&R, that years ago. Was it a solution to a problem nobody had? Was it ever used? Was it more effective than in Dad's Army shooting through the gas bag on top of Corporal Jones butchers van? (I'm sorry, but I can't even find a pic of "Out 2-3! Bang 2-3" Let alone a clip to link to).

Bradwan

Your time machine has broken down and you are in the middle of the Great War would you rather have an Fal or a G3 for the trenches of the western front?

Will Wooten

After dealing with so many American Shotguns, which do you think drove more innovation in the American Market. Ease of use, or ease or repair?

Siyu

I know there are still a lot of unknowns, but do you think you’ll get to Springfield Armory in 2021 for the mega-1911 episode(s)? Put in all the assumptions, caveats, contingencies and escape clauses that you need when forming your reply :)

David Hemsath

What fire arm do you find the most fascinating regardless of it's actual functionality?

Nicholas Resar

Why haven't you taken a fucking vacation already? After hearing the 300k subscriber podcast I increased my donation hoping it would help you keep from killing yourself on these videos, I dont want to watch someone work themselves to death on camera.

Chris Decker

Hey! How are you? What country would you like to collect if you had to stick to one ? Love your guys work!

Shishi Soulez

What prototype/weapon concept from the ww1 era do you think would be most effective?

Ryan Brown

As fellow Charlestonians, who sells the best pimento cheese? Also, thoughts on the proper method of its preparation. (I.E. the cheese to mayo ratio, etc)

Tox Mace

Has there been a design for a firearm you've come across that you looked at and went 'man, if they'd only changed this one tiny thing, this would have been amazing'? If so, what is the smallest change that would have made the biggest difference?

Peter Miles

Would you do more meme builds like with the keltec in the future?

Andrew Cutroneo

Most of the more complete collections I've gotten to see had very strict focus. If you were going to recommend some budget friendly areas of focus that a new collector might want to look into what would they be? Specifically firearms, but not limited to WWI. An example of what I mean might be surplus police handguns.

JustOldJoe

In your research have you come across records of unit volley fire employed in an indirect fire fashion?

SCOTT A UECKER

What's the absolute worst possible loadout that still gets a yes, or the best possible loadout that still gets a no, from Mae?

Matthew Jackson

If you had won a gundie, what would your charity have been?

Henry Ohme

Should kilt wearing be grounds for a cross-border travel, COVID exemption?

Britishmuzzleloaders

Which improvements do you think had the biggest impact on firearms design turn-of-the-century: metallurgy, machine tools, or test equipment?

moosemaimer

Hello! My question is, what firearm or firearm accessory for WW1 small arms was clearly from the "this will be awesome" school of manufacturing, but failed hard, stands out to you?

Jacob Blackburn

I'm currently in grad school for museum science, so my question would be "What change/improvement would like to see in the museum field?"

Daniel R.

Who's beard is better? Ian vs Matt.... Ian obviously wins on top of head hair.

threelock

How did WW1 soldiers typically clean their firearms? Did they have access to jags and patches and solvents like modern shooters, or did they use something else?

Alex

Are you two married?

Jun Kumazawa

Hi Othais And Mae how soon will you start cover the intra war year gun developments (i.e Browning High Power , P38, Cz26 leading to the Bren gun, MG 34/42 development, M1 Garand/M1 carbine) or will it be the shotgun series 1st , then the intra war years and WWII guns ?

robert j schneider

How are the patches going? I’d love to see ones with the little face animations like you did for project lightning.

James Norlin

Who would you say was the “best dressed” of WWI? Both in terms of uniform practicality and outright style.

Jack Boyle

How is the Spite Sub2000 project going?

Ryan D Thorne

Both mae and othias, you are each in charge of equiping a new nation in January of 1919 with small arms, what pistol, auto rifle, service arm, carbine(?), Omg and so one would you choose with unlimited budget, conversely if you were to sabotage what would you choose to screw them over. (Ps I think this could be a cool stand alone video)

Old Man Winter

Are milsurp prices going to go back to 2019 prices, or has the market been reset at the current higher prices?

Cam W

The prompt for this one is "WW1 tacticool"! In your research, what were some of the most interesting and/or redneck and/or "tacticool" equipment and/or field nodification that y'all came across? For example: The "reversed bullet", the villar perosa machine gun mounted on a bicycle, (I doubt it was used in ww1 but) the "silver and fletcher's expert auto ejector". There are no wrong answers (Update: I see there are around 200 questions now, so please don't kill yourselves researching this one unless you really want to. Its supposed to be fun and funny! I know y'all work really hard).

Gage

If you guys decide to do a long range segment with say sniper variants whats your opinion of just handloading to same bullet type, weight and mv and firing a few rounds from a lead sled before the actual shooting to have that idividual rifles performance to compare to Mae's performance on range with each rifle. Something of a baseline to see what it can do vs what its problems are in real life shooting with the same shooter kinda eliminating the variance due to problems that rifle might have?

Jacob Helms

What museum is at the top of your list to visit? Be it for the show or for personal interest.

Sabertooth88

Hey Guys, Love the channel. My question is: If you were head of a small European country's ordnance department at the turn of the century, which pre-war series of rifles, pistols and machine guns would you choose to equip your troops, making sure to take supply and cost into consideration.

Stephen

Other than the Italian Vetterli 1870/87/15, have there been any notable failures or near-failures of firearms on range?

David Stucker

What, if any, guns Mae has given a yes to that she doesn't like or thinks is overhyped?

Jacob Catcher

Hi guys! Love what you're doing. Your Primer series, including the episodes on the Krag-Jørgensen rifle, has been one of the diving factors that inspired me to pen my own book. The book is about the development of all Danish, Norwegian, and American krag models, and their use in both the service and in civilian life. There isn't much in-depth info on the Scandinavian models thats been written in English and I aim to help. So, since I have that on my mind, I have a question for both of y'all! Out of all the different models of Krags that ever did Krag, which of the Kragiest Krags is your favourite Krag?

Justin Baird

What is a fictional firearm that you wish you could own?

Thomas Schrader

What are the signature dishes of the show regulars? Whos the best cook.

Sam Coupland

You said you're not covering it in this series, but do you know definitively that the C-93 Borchardt was never used in WWI and if so why was it shunned despite the pistol shortage? For some reason Wikipedia says the C-93 was in service until 1945, but it doesn't specify what "in service" means.

Royeaux

I have a question for you. A lot of the rifles that you feature have very complicated sights with adjustments for windage etc which seem like a soldier would not have time to adjust in the middle of a battle. Outside of specialist personnel like snipers do you know how often these precision sights were adjusted in combat or did troops tend to just set them before a battle and then just leave them alone during a fight? Basically was all the effort put into complicate sights worth it for the avenge infantryman?

Alan Munro

What has been the hardest type of ammo for you to either find or make for the show?

Mav44

I apologize if you've since explained this elsewhere, but what's the story behind your bad experience with International Military Antiques that you cryptically posted about on Patreon several years ago?

Timothy Conklin

Pineapple on pizza? Yes or no.

Josey

How far into percussion firearms are you planning to go with reprocussion? Just revolvers? Or will we see long guns as well?

History&Coffee

When can we expect the next episode of Dino Tales?!? 😝

Adam Lewis

Silly question, but in your opinions, what modern military rifle or other firearm, like a carbine or PDW (like a P90 or Othais’s Keltec) would be best suited for use in similar conditions to the Western Front in World War One, i.e. horrible weather, mud and grit, and yet still be cheap and easy to manufacture in a war of attrition? Would it be terrible to give everyone a Hi-Point Carbine, or is that a war winning solution in that scenario?

nick G

I am a magical genie, and can either double your ammo budget for the show, or double the size of the set/room/closet you film out of. Which would make the show easier, and which wish do you wish?

Lumpytusk

If you could get your hands on a heck of a beater Ross Rifle, would you ever consider attempting the Short Ross Rifle as described at the end of the Ross Rifle episode?

Mark Churchwell

Which of the rifle cartridges of the first world war do you think struck the best balance. Considering both shoulder arm and machine gun use.

Primarch359

Spades, Hearts, or Bridge?

James McKenzie

What is the most surprising thing you have discovered from your research? Not just about the gun but about the designers, history or a weird crazy story.

Austin Hull

How is Utreon going?

David Grunt

Which shotgun are you most looking forward to covering in the series?

David Herman

Plague permitting, do you have any plans of crossing the pond to Europe? If so what firearms related stuff would you want to see?

David

What were some of Mae's favorite guns that she gave a hard no to in the Maeversation?
