You definitely hit the nail on the head when it comes to demographic culture playing into this, though. Back home in Chicagoland we have a sizeable Serb population, and I know plenty of guys who frequent my LGS only looking for Zastavas, as an example

I think when it comes to the collectors' orgs, there may just have to be a natural gap in participation between when, for lack of a better term, the fudds die out and when there are enough savvy youth to coalesce into something more than five dudes in a cigar lounge. There may again be a democratization of some of these collectibles when these estates get broken up; there are, after all, people with literal crates of Soviet weaponry that literally do nothing but sit in a basement.
Legal and cultural barriers will prolong youth's exclusion from the gun scene unlike with other niche groups such as cars and music. Hopefully the next generations that take up the mantle can do a better job of expanding this culture in the future, but for now it's going to be an uphill battle.

Actually, there were at least one & 1/2 that I can think of: VW's Vanagon came in a 4WD version [do NOT buy one, they're horrifically expensive to repair! Low production, and not well-sorted like all the vintage VDubs...] and iirc, Toyota's Previa was offered in a AWD version? (Sorry, not an expert on the Jelly Bean, but you can do a web search on your own time...) But of course, none of those options would be appealing in the American heartland, where furrin' cars are a huge PITA for parts & maintenance... ;-)

Finished listening ~ You asked for input/stories on good/bad experiences with collector groups. I have a personal experience to share. I went to the higher end collector gun show in my local area a few years back. There was one item I was highly interested in, namely a "trapper model" 94 Winchester with a short barrel in the 14"-to-15" range. I politely asked if it's serial number was on the ATF grandfathered list or if the seller had documents to prove that it came from the factory originally as a short barrel trapper model pre-NFA and was thus eligible to be added to the grandfathered list. (For those that don't know, any U.S. manufactured SBR that came from the factory originally as an SBR and sold on the U.S. civilian market before the NFA was passed into law was eligible for grandfathering and can be owned as a non-NFA rifle even though it is an SBR. The ATF has a long list of serial numbers for various manufacturers and models and even if one is not on the list but it can be proven it came from the factory that way pre-NFA then it can be added to the grandfathered list.) It was like l threw the social equivalent of a grenade into the room. I made it clear I wasn't trying to get anyone in trouble, I just really wanted a genuine grandfathered old SBR "trapper" model lever gun for my own personal collection and I was interested in buying if the guns "grandfathered" status could be confirmed. They didn't care, how dare I ask such a question, all that mattered was that it was a pre-NFA trapper Winchester 94, how dare I ask for confirmation that it's serial number was on the grandfathered list or there was paperwork to prove it came from the factory as a trapper model. "Don't you know, you young punk! All the pre-NFA trappers are grandfathered!" Funny thing is that I personally hate the NFA which is why I want a grandfathered trapper model lever gun, because it's the one SBR that I can legally own without having to register it with the feds. and can travel with across state lines without having to ask permission from the government first !!! Plus I just love the look and history of those trapper model short barrel lever guns. So, collector associations - don't act that way when a "young little wipper snapper" just wants to be sure all the legal i's are dotted and it's are crossed before they consider buying a collectable gun - especially if it's a gun that must meet some kind of "grandfathered" standard to be legal or not require extra legal hassle to own.

Ian Forgotten-Weapons sent me a link to get all his videos as podcasts, but nothing comes through it because I'm at a cheaper tier on his Patreon, so there's a way to do this that is Patreon-restricted by $ level for sure. The biggest current Patreon is for a podcast called "Chapo Trap House" which produces both public and Patreon-only podcasts and you have to go in at $5 a month to get all the podcasts, so they can do it. Ian can do it. I'm sure there's a way for you to do it. Patreon is full of podcasts, so there's probably some creator advice for this somewhere behind the scenes.

Sorry, continued. Their website has a show schedule and not much else, and the membership enticements appear to be flyers on tables near the door. Not really geared to younger people. the shows are a combination of collectors and a regular gun show, however. If you want to see old guys running someplace to their own taste without technology, take a look at the range and club I'm a member at. Whoo boy. Sign up for working hours not on the website, but by email to a person who will set it up. No IT director? No problem! Sigh.

And that might be another Avenue to expand. A seperate round table (like everyone else has) where you just shoot the shit for an hour. It allows for a separation of politics from the main show, but allows you to be more active politically. Just avoid the echo chamber most folks fall into on both ends of the spectrum. If you go for the echo chamber it's boring and you will only wind up with a million +listeners and advertisers not caring what you say/do.

Advice for starting/maintaining a "club". From the club I belong to for the range. 1) This is restating something you already know, but I don't like to assume; Do whatever you can do to make entry into the club/group as easy as possible. In our case about 8 years ago they simply posted an email address and had folks who were interested sign up to get notified of the monthly "range walk through"/"membership sign up". Went from about 50-75 members to almost 500 in a few years. 2) Value: Our club is one of several that offers access to the same range. We are the cheap option. Other clubs are much more active but cost more. With the understanding that the more you give with membership the higher the cost of membership and the higher the cost the fewer the number of people who will be willing to join, What is the value point ($) you want to be at, and what can you offer for that? If you get myopic and fixate on "look at all the stuff we offer" you will miss a bunch of folks and long term it may not be sustainable.
