What would you guys like to see here?

Hey everyone, I'm so glad you all are here! I still haven't promoted my Patreon too much just yet, but wanted to ask you guys what kind of content you'd like to see here. Please let me know below! In addition to all the educational content and Patreon-exclusive reactions, I'm open to ideas for other fun bonus stuff that doesn't really fit into those categories.

Tomorrow on YouTube, I'm hearing Mike Watt for the first time (I know, that's embarrassing), but I'm comparing Minutemen and fIREHOSE back-to-back, and just finished up the video. This one was really fun and I didn't expect either band to sound the way they did. Check the channel tomorrow afternoon!

My next reaction for Patreon goes up this Friday and will be "Sour Girl" by Stone Temple Pilots, which is a band I'm loosely familiar with, but only a handful of songs. Thanks to one of our members here, Brad, for the request!

Having "five" weeks in January threw off my schedule a bit, but next week will be another chunk of lesson courses posted for Juniors here, focusing on improvisation, and is about four hours worth of video lessons!

Lastly, I wanted to point out that I will HEAVILY be relying on the 'Collections' tab at the top of this page to organize all content. A few earlier members expressed that it was tough to find anything and seemed unorganized (due to the single post feed), so please go there to see everything categorized - especially the lesson content. All lessons are laid out in exactly the order I'd like you to watch them in, from top to bottom. All other content is posted chronologically.

Cheers, love you all!

As long as you are exploring the punk genre, early New Model Army has some really interesting bass work. Almost anything from their first two albums would be an interesting listen. Hard to narrow it down but Ambition, Great Expectations, or My Country may be a cool place to start.

Open to anything, just let me know what song and I'll see what I can do!

Great suggestions Andrew! I've got 1979 on my list and just haven't gone back and selected a song. I'll do that one when I get to them!

Gauging the room on SNFU? I personally can't say "Oh this song" from them, but they always make it back into my rotation every few months and they have such an unique sound.

The content on the YouTube channel has been so great. It may sound weird, but it’s really cool to see songs that I’ve grown up loving, broken down in such a way. My dream reactions would be the following: Another dead Kennedy’s reaction, picking something from Plastic Surgery Disasters. Either Winnebago Warrior or Bleed For Me. Then something by All, Karl Alvarez’s other band; Original Me would be my pick there. I’m sure you have lots of recs for the next Propagandhi song, but my rec would be Supporting Caste. But I think a great one to do would be a band called Death From Above 1979. It’s just bass and drums and it’s pretty ferocious. Right On, Frankenstein is a ripping track.

Hey Christopher - really appreciate the detailed feedback! Always open to artist/player suggestions, but you really hit the nail on the head as far as my motive with the YouTube channel. I always felt rock and metal bassists were constantly overshadowed, even in the press. All I want to do is show appreciation and unearth their ability that many overlook. I didn't expect to be doing punk videos, but I'm grateful the audience steered me there because it's been highly inspiring to me as a player (and a forever student of the instrument).

There's one thing I'd like to encourage that I haven't really found elsewhere. You seem to have stumbled on a niche that hasn't been well served - intelligent, thoughtful reactions to punk songs (focused on bass). Many (too many) years ago, I bought a bass guitar after hearing Journey to the End of the East Bay by Rancid. I listened to it three times in a row, and that was it. At that time, contemporary rock had relegated the bass player to the back corner (both physically and aurally). Hearing the bass be the most important sound in a rock band was brain cleansing. On top of that, punk is the most accessible sound - anyone can play it. There are some amazing punk bassists that truly get no recognition outside of a very small group. So, it's nice to see it get respected and highlighted. I have so many bands / songs in my head that I'd recommend from what I've listened to over the years. However, beyond that, there's a chance to highlight interesting bass sounds from bands / songs that really get no light of day anywhere else. All the videos cover the most popular songs ad-infinitum. Beyond punk, it would be interesting to show the same bass love to those rarely receive it.

She's great! She actually emailed me months ago before her latest album release asking if I would, but she only sent me some short-form videos that were 20-30 seconds each, and I said it might be tough unless I can review a full song. I never heard back and don't know if she later put something out, but thanks for reminding me to look back into this! I agree - she's a phenomenal player!

Hey Mark, really enjoying the content here so far. The only suggestion I have is for a reaction to something by Mohini Dey. She's so ridiculously talented and I know your reaction would be fantastic. Cheers!

Michael Nightingale

Great suggestion! The week after next, I think I'm going to do something like that on YouTube to start out, stay tuned and let me know what you think. Then, I can do more of that here if time allows!

Mark Michell

Right on! Appreciate the nice words - great ideas, I have some good ideas for that stuff.

Mark Michell

Awesome! I'll start uploading all 3 parts next week, one difficulty level module every Monday.

Mark Michell

Rad! Really appreciate the support, and hope you enjoyed it.

Mark Michell

Play throughs are awesome. I'm really enjoying the backing tracks. Might move my subscription up a notch to check out he improve lessons.

Kevin Krajewski

I joined to see the RKL reaction

Really enjoyed the LTJ playthough you did, maybe patreon exclusive play throughs with tabs or riff break downs? Would also be really fun to have you react/breakdown one of your favorite songs and what you like about it. Really enjoy all the content, you're a fun dude to watch!

oscar johnson

I loved the video of you playing LTJ. I would like too see more YOU playing some songs from beginning to end, and I'd love to see you take some nice and/or hard bass riffs, play them and tell the musical theory behind them. It would be nice for example you play a Joe Raposo riff, tell the theory behind it (I dont know maybe it is just a pentatonic scale) and link to the lesson in which you teach the whole pentatonic stuff.
